  1. If anyone does join the tour you should stop in Winslow, Arizona to "stand on the corner"... I was there earlier today with my lovely travel companion and wife (same person) and we also had a really nice meal at Dar's Route 66 Diner. All worth the time it took us to get there. Tomorrow it's back to Canada. BTW, we had a nice visit with Chuck and Chris Collins earlier this week. It is nice to get to meet some of the people I have been dealing with over the years.

  2. I found the reference...

The Zare Brothers of Northeast Avanti in New Rochelle, New York. They had a 1986 Avanti set up for road racing at the Northeast Atlantic Zone Meet in 1987. Ernie Loga is from Eau Claire, Wisconsin... I wonder if the Zare's are still around?

I found a listing for the business...

Does anyone know if they had any success with their racing endeavor back in the late 80's? What happened to the car?

  3. Wow. Gotta luv the weather....

My lark has passed its inspection and I have figured out most of the other problems it had so it is now on the road as my other daily driver... That does not mean the Avanti will be out frolicking in the snow with it, just that I don't have to fire up the Diesel truck to go get eggs...

  4. These predrilled mounts will do for me . When I get time I will have a screen mounted in front of the radiator and be just a little bit less worried about catching a stray rock... Now a stray dog is a totally different problem!.

  5. Excellent suggestions. I have been pondering this question for a while but did NOT want to make any extra holes in the front panel. I just had a look at the car as it sits on the hoist and I can see a way to install an expanded metal and blacked out grill (or something else close looking) in the existing holes on the rad bracket that will protect my grill and not make any changes to the panels.

This might not work for an R1 with air conditioning. I think the holes I will be using are for the condenser....

OK. So why not still use them?.

  6. I figure I should throw this in so you don't find out about it the way I did, through experiencing it...

Make sure you don't allow the ignition switch to start slowly rotating so that the key actually needs to be turned sideways to go in the slot. This would indicated that your switch has worked its way out of the notches on the bezel and is slowly backing out of the mounting hole. If allowed to continue you could end up experiencing what happens when the hot connector on the ignition switch contacts the dash bracket. Sparks will fly! If you are lucky you will not fry your wiring and with a bit of a reach behind the switch you should be able to push the switch towards you and turn it while holding the bezel in front to get it locked back in place.

For me this happened while I was actually driving the car home after I had just purchased it... I was 20 miles into a 1200 mile drive. Not a whole lot of fun!

  7. Sounds like you have a family car and know the history. That is great. Getting the car drivable should only be a matter of seals, hoses, gasket kits and any other and sundry piece that can wear out, dry out or otherwise fail through nothing other than just age.

Go over it with a fine tooth comb and don't be in a rush. Having all your ducks in a row before re-assembly will save a lot of headaches.

    Enjoy!

  8. The standard power steering system can normally be rebuilt for under $100 if you want to pull it apart and do it yourself. All the rebuild kits are available and normally it is only the seals and rubber bits that need replacing. I know as I am going through this process right now. Make sure all the other steering components are tight and you should have a decent driving car by the time you are done.

Mind you if the car was seriously neglected before you got it all bets are off. As stated above, most components (not all) can be replaced with early Ford parts so you should still be able to salvage it and get back on the road.

  9. I am heading back to the original thread...

I have a '63 R2 that I LOVE getting out on the road. Hagerty says I can't use it to drive to work or any such thing, but it has been to work. It spent the last 4 months at the glass shop waiting to get a new windshield. That is a story in itself...

I got it back last week but only because the glass was finally installed and it was +45 degrees up here. This is January and it should be -30 but noooooo.... I have been using it occasionally around town (I live in a small town in Alberta, Canada) since it lives in the garage under my Lark (which seems to have found an almost permanent perch on my hoist) and then has to be pulled out of the garage so I can work on the Lark.

This situation hopefully shall soon be changed and the Avanti will be back on top of the hoist in its place of honour. The Lark will then be parked underneath.

  10. I have to throw in my 2 cents, as I am one of the (sometimes) participants and sometimes lurkers...

The information gleaned off this forum is very much interesting to me, but not always all of it. That is not a problem as I am capable of filtering what I need. I am sure all who visit this forum are, too.

A point that was brought up that I agree with is source. If you pose a question and present an answer please provide a reference. Short and sweet is OK. I look at this forum almost as much as a learning tool as entertainment. I get both out of it.

I like to see questions from other participants but I have no control over that. Time to hit the books and see what I can come up with... Enjoy.

  11. I was sold an orange viscous style fan for my R2 Avanti but when installed found that it just contacted the top of the shroud so I replaced it with a 15" aftermarket flex fan. What size diameter are the original Lark fans? Does the shape of the notch on the end of each blade make a difference?

    Actually two questions...

  12. I enjoy the Trivia forum and have also learned a few things. Most of them are things that will probably make NO difference in the long run, but who cares. I have responded to a couple of posts with follow-up questions but sometimes I can't remember exactly which trivia subject question my follow-ups were under, so I don't know if they may have received answers or not. Oh well.

    Keep it up!

  13. By definition we could call this forum discussion area "Avanti unimportant information", but I for one am finding a lot of useful information here as well... Mind you, if I do read something that seems not right I will pose a counter question and hope to get a clarification or rebuttal. If I do need more in-depth assistance with a problem there are very specific sites that I then use. Anything I learn about my car through this forum area is all good so keep the "trivia" coming.

So, does anyone know the answer to Dapy's question?
