FoLola Posted December 19, 2017 Report Posted December 19, 2017 Here is a fix I thought might be useful to others. I bought a couple of Strato-Vue mirrors on Ebay. It turns out I don't need them but I wanted to fix them up anyway. They buffed up nicely but the ball/socket was worn and they would not hold their positions. I carefully pried out the glass mirrors that were held with a semi hard goop. There is a spring-steel strap that is supposed to provide friction on the ball. Since it is riveted there is no way to adjust to stiffen up the ball/socket. I took a piece of stainless steel safety wire, looped it around the ball where it meets the spring strap and gave it a tight spin with the safety wire pliers. That did the trick. The mirrors are now nice and tight. I can put them in the spare parts bin knowing they will serve someone in the future.
Jolly-John Posted December 22, 2017 Report Posted December 22, 2017 (edited) Thanks for taking the time to post your neat fix, FoLola. There are a lot of floppy Strato-Vue mirrors out there....very helpful. John Edited December 22, 2017 by Jolly-John
lschuc Posted December 24, 2017 Report Posted December 24, 2017 Thanks for the tip.... I'd like to use it in the next magazine. Did you take any photos while doing the repair? Lew
FoLola Posted December 25, 2017 Author Report Posted December 25, 2017 I tried to take a few shots but they were too blurry. I'll try again after I read the camera manual.
FoLola Posted December 25, 2017 Author Report Posted December 25, 2017 Ischuc: Here are a couple of shots I took with my cell phone. Go figure.
MARK Posted December 26, 2017 Report Posted December 26, 2017 This will be a huge help, thanks so much especially for the pictures
BillyBob Posted January 5, 2018 Report Posted January 5, 2018 Re your repair: Do you know - repops or OE?
FoLola Posted January 7, 2018 Author Report Posted January 7, 2018 BillyBob: I don't know for sure if they are original or not. Is there a way to tell??
