Footer Posted yesterday at 12:08 PM Report Posted yesterday at 12:08 PM As Studebaker’s days were waning and engine supplies dwindling, Avantis were offered with the venerable flat head six for export, although the discounted option was never documented.
mfg Posted yesterday at 12:41 PM Report Posted yesterday at 12:41 PM That would have been an easy ‘bolt in’…..but it never happened! However these days, with fuel prices being what the are, the idea isn’t that far fetched!! 😉
mfg Posted yesterday at 01:08 PM Report Posted yesterday at 01:08 PM As an aside… a Stude pal of mine once swapped out a flathead six in a ‘55 Champ coupe with a tall ‘64 overhead valve six… I thought he’d never be able to close the hood over that engine, however, the hood shut with no problem!

When I was a kid I bought a really nice ‘58 Silver Hawk with a 185 CI flathead six… No power steering, however I remember how nice and light it steered with that sweet little six under the hood. So, of course, I ‘improved’ that Hawk by pulling out the six… and replacing it with an improperly installed ‘58 392 CI Chrysler Hemi, which I yanked out of an Imperial my uncle was junking!!
