mfg Posted September 27, 2015 Report Posted September 27, 2015 The maximum torque of a mid seventies 400 CI Avanti ll engine is?.......1) 340...........2) 380..........3) 400....or 430 ft. lbs.
Avanti83 Posted September 27, 2015 Report Posted September 27, 2015 My guess in none of the above by the mid 70's I think they were 300 or less. Early ones, 400 ft-lbs or so.
BRitz Posted September 27, 2015 Report Posted September 27, 2015 A stock 400 in 1970 put out 350lbs of torque, by 1977 smog emission's had choked torque down to only 290lbs. However, when properly "massaged" the 400 cu. engine could achieve well over 400lbs of torque. So, 430 ft-lbs is my guesstimate.
plwindish Posted September 27, 2015 Report Posted September 27, 2015 I'm guessing 380. 430 is entirely possible as my 76 was rebuilt and warmed up 4 years ago. Dyno results before motor went back in the car were 365 HP and 460 pounds torque. That was 27000 miles ago and its still going strong.
mfg Posted September 27, 2015 Author Report Posted September 27, 2015 Well I'd say that you're all CORRECT....Avanti Motors advertised 3)......400ft lbs though.
Avanti83 Posted September 27, 2015 Report Posted September 27, 2015 Well I'd say that you're all CORRECT....Avanti Motors advertised 3)......400ft lbs though. Not in the mid-70's they didn't http://www.automobile-catalog.com/make/avanti/avanti_ii/avanti_ii_coupe/1975.html Even GM was way down by the mid-70's with under 300 ft-lbs on all but one spec. 1970 was 400 but, IIRC, the question was mid-70's.
mfg Posted September 29, 2015 Author Report Posted September 29, 2015 Old mfg made a tiny boo-boo..............in the mid seventies, Avanti Motors rated their 400CI Chevy to have 390 ft lbs of torque. (at 2400 RPM)
