murph the surf Posted December 29, 2024 Report Posted December 29, 2024 (edited) Because of its acclaimed styling, a 1963 Studebaker Avanti was a featured exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City in 1971, and it had to be turned on its side to be brought into the building . True or false, and why ??? Edited December 29, 2024 by murph the surf

True or false, and why ??? Yes, that story is true…. It was for a Raymond Loewy tribute… A custom moving dolly was crafted by a local moving company which somehow put that Avanti ll on its side….apparently without damaging it… UNREAL!!!
mfg Posted December 29, 2024 Report Posted December 29, 2024 I’m guessing that custom moving dolly operated something like the rotisseries auto restorers use today to access all areas of a cars body… It must have securely fastened to that Avantis frame…. however…. NOT WITH MY AVANTI YOU DON’T!!!!
murph the surf Posted December 29, 2024 Author Report Posted December 29, 2024 That darn sure would not have been my Avanti, either-and it was absolutely amazing that the car sustained no damage during the installation............But I can't call your "true" answer correct.
Gunslinger Posted December 29, 2024 Report Posted December 29, 2024 False…it was at the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery in 1975. It was about Raymond Loewy’s designs. Renwick Gallery Avanti

Renwick Gallery Avanti Nailed it!...I remember receiving an article about it in some Avanti ll promotional literature some years back, and somehow subsequently always remembered the venue as being MoMA until a debate ensued. It was a '75 Avanti ll on display at a Raymond Loewy exhibition,The Designs of Raymond Loewy, and it was indeed at the Smithsonian in the Renwick Gallery. The Renwick was once a private home, thus the "narrow" passageways that necessitated the '75 Avanti ll being brought in on it's side. Edited December 29, 2024 by murph the surf

With your depth of knowledge about the Avanti, you were ALMOST correct, even down to the car being an Avanti ll rather than a Studebaker Avanti-it was just simply the wrong venue..
