John D Posted April 20, 2023 Report Posted April 20, 2023 My '79 with a AFB carb uses a manifold vacuum tap for advance on the Mallory HEI distributor. Mild original 350. My other 2 AFB applications (59 Stude truck 289 and a Ford 302 in a Champ) use ported vacuum off the front of the carb. Advice?
Gunslinger Posted April 20, 2023 Report Posted April 20, 2023 With an Edelbrock version of the AFB their manual calls for ported vacuum. I will assume the original AFB...whether Carter or Edelbrock...would be the same.

John D Posted April 24, 2023 Author Report Posted April 24, 2023 I don't think the 79s came with an AFB or a Torker manifold. Also I think the distributor cares more than the AFB would... well, easy enough to try it I guess.
John D Posted April 24, 2023 Author Report Posted April 24, 2023 also note- after perusing the HAMB and other forums for SBC tips, some of my tunability issues may relate to the use of the MT-1 (Torker) single plane intake. With 3.08 gears and a 700R4 she rarely goes past 3000 RPM in normal driving, and single planes like R's.... Looks like I'm shopping for a Edelbrock Performer EPS 2701 next week. There are cases to be made for manifold and ported vacuum use on the SBC.
