I don't believe it's ever been conclusively determined. Depending on who the source, credit for the Avanti name has been given to Raymond Loewy, the D'Arcy Ad agency or Sherwood Egbert. Loewy had been quoted as giving Egbert credit.

Unless some documentation comes to light, it may remain another Avanti mystery.

Gunslinger sounds 'On the Money'...I'd just like to add that as we all know, Avanti means Forward in Italian.....A very positive move choosing this 'Forward' name over a 'Looking Back' type name like Pierce Arrow or Packard, which I believe Studebaker was considering using. Two great old names,..but certainly not what the new Avanti was all about!
