Gunslinger
No...Avanti Motors, as low volume manufacturer, received an extension on that and other mandatory safety requirements. It wasn't until either the very late 1970 model year or officially the 1971 model year they began installing impact absorbing steering columns in their production line. My '70 was assembled in September of 1970 and has the original Studebaker steering column. Depending on the year Avanti Motors sourced their impact absorbing steering columns from either AMC or Chrysler.
