Thanks for the description. No, my starter is not on the bell housing. I got the car in pieces, I am working on putting the engine together. Many bolts are missing.

Looking for 2 starter bolts for my 63 Avanti. The parts manual just says special bolts. Look long, 1/4 in diameter? and have a straight screwdriver head? I will buy them from you plus pay shipping. None on my car.

FWIW I thought all Avanti engines were black. <
I'm going to paint my 1963 A/C engine before it goes in....black?

The crossmember is already out.

I'm near done assembling the engine. Next I will attach the transmission to the engine. Should I do that? Or lower the transmission into the car, then hook the engine to it? Would it be easier to take the body off the frame? I tried 5 body bolts, and, each one of them broke free. Someone might have taken the body off previously. What would be the easiest way to get the engine in?

Dunkin, I didnt know the parts book was so detailed. I ordered one from EBAY. Thank you again for your information. The book should help a lot, my car and engine is in pieces.

Thank you. Probably the longer ones for the 4 tabs.

I am putting together the engine. Lots of bolts are missing. I have the owners manual. I am trying to find the eight intake manifold bolts, and, 4 tabs to attach the intake. The manual states 3/8 by 16 thread, but how long should they be? Apparently, I can get them at NAPA, but, what length?

What do original Avanti piston rings look like? Do they have dimples, or dots on the top side of the ring that faces up? Of the two compression rings, is one narrower than the other? Anyone have a picture?
-
Do original, factory Studebaker rings have a dimple that should be on top? Mine do.

Leo,
Thank you. I have a Shop Manual, and, never go anywhere without it. As stated above, the top ring is narrower than the second ring. Both grooves are the same dimensions. The top ring has .007 inches of clearance, which is out of spec. They seem to be factory pistons, did someone install incorrect compression rings? Can anyone tell me if their first and second rings are the same size, or is the top one narrower? Thanks.
-
Thank you. They are flat top.

Hi,
How can you tell if your pistons are original? Also, should the top two rings be identical? My top ring is narrower than the second ring. There is a .007 inch gap between the ring and groove on the first ring. There is a .004 inch gap on the second ring.

Did you ever get the paint code? I would like it too.

Check to see that all the wires are attached at the ignition switch. I had a parts car that had a severed wire right at the switch.
