Hey, you are giving me some hope. I have a starter, I think it is a MDU 7005 or 7006, fits 61 to 64 Studebaker, and indeed, it fits on there. It might have been the one that was on the car, the previous owner gave it to me in a hurry. It was a running driving car before... However, I bench tested it the other day, and, it shorts out. As soon as I hook up a negative cable, I get a shower of sparks. I put a multimeter on it, it shows continuity from the positive cable terminal to the case. It also showered sparks when I had it attached to the engine. Any comments on that? I took the two long screws out, it looks good in there. Brushes nice and full... As for the booster, yes hope, I got maybe the last booster in a NAPA store for a 68 New Yorker which I was told would fit, it didnt. Do you guys use a proportioning valve, and, the Avanti original brake junction box? Thank you 64 Stude, I am kinda at an impass, been working about a half hour a day since August.

One shield is a straight strip of angle iron, the other is a bookend shaped piece, according to the parts manual.
-
Thanks anyway. Studebaker International does show them, I ordered them, $12 and $10 or so a piece, the receipt showed up "out of stock." Phil Harris keeps saying he has them, but he doesn't. Like I said, hard to find. I am trying to put together Avanti #4788. I still need a starter and a brake booster. Impossible to get without cores.

Thanks. Let me know.

64Stude, If you want to sell me those shields, I'll buy 'em and pay shipping. I live in central PA 17866. 570 898 1992

Since I can't find the lower shield, and, the side shield for the torque converter housing anywhere, do you think I really need them? Parts number 1549244 and 1549243.

Well, anyway, Studebaker International is going to start reproducing these, its just a matter of when.

I had a shop rebuild the hoses, retaining new couplings that allow the hose to swivel, that Studebaker originally built into the hose. $68 for both! Used the original end connectors because they are bent such that they will attach correctly. Still had trouble! I unscrewed the hose with the coupling so that I only had the end piece to attach. It went right on! Without the drag of the hose pulling it, it was easy as anything to attach. The coupling joined right up, good to go. Now I hope I have them in the proper holes....

I'm certain. The one that came with it is a Bendix 6945 I think. I looked it up, it is from a 69 or 70 Mustang. It barely fit on there, the nuts just caught to hold it on. The pushrod jammed against the firewall.

Change of plans. I will use a pickle fork and pry the power cylinder off, if I have to. I am not going to attempt it now for two reasons. One, it might be difficult to force it back on?? Two, I think I can get the hoses rebuilt by a shop that rebuilds hydraulic hoses. I will check tomorrow. The old fittings are bent such that they go on much easier than the new ones, I cant get the upper one started on the power cylinder.
I might be mixed up on which hose goes where after all this. I think the upper hole on the power cylinder goes to the upper hole on the control valve, and, this is the shorter hose. Can anyone confirm this?
Thanks again.

Thanks, so they are tight, nice to know, I will get a pickle fork and try it tomorrow.

Ahh, I think I am messing up my steering in the 63 Avanti. Went to replace the left and right turn hoses. In the first place, one seems too short, its a tight stretch. More than that, the end at the power cylinder is facing the wrong way. I attached it to the control valve, it faces the outside of the car, not the inside toward the power cylinder like it should. Even worse, I cant get the ends screwed into the power cylinder, so I decided to take the power cylinder out, and, hold it in my hand, then screw the hoses in. I cant get the cylinder out!!!! Per shop manual, I took the cotter pin out, took the crenelated nut off, it wont come loose from the bellcrank!!!! What is wrong here??? On the other end, I took the nut and washer off, it moved down the smallest bit, after I hit it a couple times with a hammer! Please, can anyone help with advice on how to get the power cylinder out? Am i missing something?

I'm looking for a brake booster, new or rebuildable for my 1963 Avanti. I think any from 1963 to 1971 fit. Mine came with a broken booster from who knows what car, not an Avanti. Live in central PA.

No, starter bolts to bell housing. Perfect picture, thank you.

Oh, and, should there be a magnet in there? There is a round indentation in the pan, like there should be a magnet in it.

Thank you!!!

I took the filter out of the transmission. Got a new one. The new one has the screen on top, where the tubes go into it. The old one had the screen on the bottom. The parts manual shows it on top. Anyone know why the difference? Am I OK to put the new one in? Also, the parts manual shows an O ring on one of those tubes, there was no O ring when I took the filter off. Should I get an O ring???

Wait, the one on the Avanti in the AACA museum is bare metal...

Looks like everyone just sprays them gloss black.

Hey, what color is the automatic transmission in a 1963 Avanti. Cleaned mine, and, it looks like its gold, that can't be right?
