I purchased a 1987 new.  There were quality issues, but I do not remember anything that was anywhere near as bad as what you show.  Has your car been hit or worked on in the past 34 years?

I am unaware of any previous work.  There were two previous owners.  There are cracks on top of the front fenders above both wheel wells.  I suspect it may have had a hit at one time.

  2. Thank-you.  I found the vent window adjustments you spoke of.  The top one was frozen and I could not turn it at all.  The bottom one was too, however I was able to grab the disc part with vise grips and break it free.  In the end, I could not move it in enough to make a difference.  Also as you can see by the attached photos, the door is way out from the body.  There are no shims where the hinges attach to the door.  So I don't know how I could possibly bring it in.  As you can see, the top of the vent is about an inch out from the windshield pillar and the bottom is about a quarter inch out.  It looks awful and I had to put a thick piece of rubber over the existing rubber just to seal out the wind!  Did these cars actually leave the factory this bad?

  3. I just took a photo inside the gas tank of my 87 convertible. Oh my God! This is a disaster waiting to happen. I cannot believe my fuel line has not already clogged. Are there any tips on how to clean this thing out? Also, I installed a new sending unit for the tank and it keeps hanging up on empty on hard turns even though I have a  half tank of fuel.  Does the arm need to be bend a certain way to swing freely?  I am told the convertible tanks are different.

  4. Thanks for the picture!  The brass colored frame is what is in mine.  However the center part on mine is something different that has been cut and welded.  Do you know what car this was originally intended for?  I keep hearing Chrysler Lebaron, but I have not found a single picture online that looks like what we have.  I have got mine to almost go up and down, but it binds at the curves because there is not room for the glass to slide far enough on the plate in the center.

  5. On the 87 models, is there any wiggle room to adjust the door for a tighter fit at the windshield/vent window?  Mine is leaning out almost a half inch and the wind noise is awful!  I took off the door panel and did not see any access.  Any input and photos would be greatly appreciated.

  6. Well I just spent a  whole day with the best fabricator in our area.  We tried to fit the Sebring regulator and it was an epic fail.  So back to square one.  There (to my knowledge) is no replacement on planet Earth for a rear quarter window regulator.  I'll be selling my 3 window car for whatever I can get for it.  Never buy an Avanti convertible that has not been well maintained!

May be located under the passenger dash near the ECM. Not sure where Avanti hid it, but its there.

Should be 1 of the wires coming off of the distributor, follow the tan wire.

    Good luck,

I can not find any single wires with a connector in this car.  (At least that's accessible)  Here are photos of the distributer connector and the ECM connectors.  The ECM connectors each have a tan wire with a black tracer.  I don't know which one to disconnect.  I'll have to cut the right one and reconnect.

  8. I just replaced the dashboard bulbs with LEDs.  Now they don't come on at all.  Are they incompatible with the dimmer in the headlight switch?  I swap out my bulbs in my 64 Hawk with LEDs and had no issues.  But of course those cars had a static instrument light switch.

  9. Yes it is a Quadrajet.  Thanks for the info.  I looked at the carb and besides the choke coil heater there is only a fast idle solenoid on the opposite side.  I took the connector off because it was idling very high when in gear and I could barely stop the car when driving!  This car is a real mess!

Sometimes dieseling can be caused by the throttle plates not closing all the way. Could be cause of hard starting as well.

There was a new carburetor installed by the previous owner just before I got the car.  I'll look at that.  Thanks.

  11. What's going on with my engine is hard starts sometimes.  And when you shut it down, sometimes it will diesel and knock for a few seconds before it stops running.  I was told that the timing was off and setting it properly should correct it.
