May be located under the passenger dash near the ECM. Not sure where Avanti hid it, but its there.
Should be 1 of the wires coming off of the distributor, follow the tan wire.
Good luck,
Jim Wood
I can not find any single wires with a connector in this car. (At least that's accessible) Here are photos of the distributer connector and the ECM connectors. The ECM connectors each have a tan wire with a black tracer. I don't know which one to disconnect. I'll have to cut the right one and reconnect.

Problem solved. The cheap sockets they used are junk. One of them shorted and was blowing fuses. I need to find good aftermarket sockets and replace all of them!

I just replaced the dashboard bulbs with LEDs. Now they don't come on at all. Are they incompatible with the dimmer in the headlight switch? I swap out my bulbs in my 64 Hawk with LEDs and had no issues. But of course those cars had a static instrument light switch.

My wife hates the dash layout on my 87 convertible. There is no place to keep things besides the door pockets and the small console. And besides the hvac system shows and is ugly! I wondered if anyone had made some sort of shelf or glovebox to put in that area that is useful and looks decent? Pictures?

Yes it is a Quadrajet. Thanks for the info. I looked at the carb and besides the choke coil heater there is only a fast idle solenoid on the opposite side. I took the connector off because it was idling very high when in gear and I could barely stop the car when driving! This car is a real mess!

Sometimes dieseling can be caused by the throttle plates not closing all the way. Could be cause of hard starting as well.
There was a new carburetor installed by the previous owner just before I got the car. I'll look at that. Thanks.

What's going on with my engine is hard starts sometimes. And when you shut it down, sometimes it will diesel and knock for a few seconds before it stops running. I was told that the timing was off and setting it properly should correct it.

I've heard that many times. However, I cannot find any pictures on the internet of any Chrysler units that even come close to resembling what is in my car.

Window motor world will not touch the quarter windows on the Avanti convertibles anymore. They sent mine back to me.

This is a single wire NEAR the distributor, should be tan on one side of the connector and tan\black on other side.
You can also go to www.montecarloSS.com and search their site for info.
Their site is full of good info for your Avanti.
Good luck,
Jim Wood
I looked everywhere, and cannot find any wires as you described on my car.

Thank-you Jim

I sent my 87 convertible quarter window to them and they said they could do nothing with it and sent it back. So far, no one in the world has been able to fix these things.
-
There are two connectors on the distributer. One has two wires and the other has several.

Most of the smog stuff has been disconnected. Still proceed as you said?
-
I replaced the sender and now the gauge pegs past 60 PSI. I hope that is what my engine is putting out!
-
Thank you for the info.

On the 87 Avanti, what should the timing mark be set at? On most of the GM forums people say between 6-8 degrees BTDC. What is recommended for the Avanti 305?
-
It could be a fate worse than death.

Thank-you Ed. Now the challenge is how the heck do I get the linkage out of there!
-
The arm mount is tight. It is loose before that point. There is as much as 3 inches of play when you move the arm.
-
There is a lot of slop in my wiper arm mechanism. The passenger arm is fairly tight, but the driver's is real loose. Are they the same unit under the dash as all previous versions? And most importantly, are they accessible to remove and replace!!!
-
Thank you Jim. I also had a local mechanic tell me that there's a small motor in the gauge that usually goes bad causing my current symptom?

The one in the block should power the gauge. I had to replace one laying in the snow in Colorado in winter years ago. The gauge was reading really low pressure and I was 800 miles from home so I didn’t want to chance it for the drive back. Replacing the sender fixed it.
Thank-you! I'm on it!

I found both units. There's one on the block. I disconnected it and it made no change. Then I put 12 volts to the wire and again no change. There is also a sender I found under the distributer. It has two contacts. I shorted them and still no effect on the gauge. This is a very peculiar problem I have never encountered before!
