  1. I tore the dashboard down to parade rest in preparation of installing a new dash pad, which the previous owner was kind enough to include with the car.

The old pad has some flaws, but is not in terrible condition.

I'm not real impressed with the quality/feel of the replacement cover. I don't know who manufactured it, but the details don't seem real sharp or deep. This is very noticeable on the glove box door.

I am considering using a vinyl refurbishing kit (like they sell at Eastwood) on the old dash pad, and then using fawn vinyl dye.

Has anyone had good/bad experience using this or a similar kit?

    Any advice?

  2. I am trying to determine what color the carpet should be for my Avanti Red R2 (63R-2302). I thought it was red/black due to the carpet on the bottom of the door cards.

The production order states the interior vinyl should be fawn/elk.

I was surprised to see that fawn/el was not offered with red/black carpet. So the carpet must have been changed at some point. (The spare tire cover also is covered with red/black carpet, and I know that is not correct!)

Is there anyway to know what color it should be? Or just pick which color scheme (1, 2, or 3) I like?

    Thanks!

    Mike

  3. Feller,

I don't have what you are asking for, but I am also restoring a 63 R2, 2302, just two cars ahead of yours on the assembly line! I would love to know more about your car.

Back to the subject at hand; how will this manual be sold/distributed?

    Thanks!

  4. I bought it from the seller in Columbus, OH and it's in Belleville, IL now, across the river from St Louis. The PO gave it a double rotissarie restoration, and passed away before it could be finished. The bottom of the shell is painted the correct Avanti red and the frame, engine, and transmission are restored. It is a few months away from getting the topcoat painted. I am aiming to have it complete for the South Bend meet in 2017!

  5. I understand the sensitivity of the subject. I come from the classic (Austin/Morris/Innocenti) where the cars were produced for 41 years, and complete new shells were available from the factory. So the re-shelling of a rusted or wrecked Mini would often lead to re-vining, which is illeagal. This is why you see 1968 Austin Minis on eBay with fuel injection and airbags!

I was hoping against hope to find the plate in one of the boxes, but no such luck.

Thanks for the leads. I will follow up on them!

  6. The surprises with my new project just keep rolling in!

I found these funny looking fiberglass squares in a box, painted on the backside. I thought they were some sort of seat mounts, but the St Louis AOAI experts showed me where they were the side bumper mounts, and had been cut off the front and rear fenders.

The previous owner must have decided the bumpers were trashed beyond repair (they are) and decided to go the resto-mod route and smoothed out the fenders. I so wish he had not done that.

I would like to put them back in, and worry about finding front and rear bumpers later.

Do you think these spots have been weakened and would just crack if they were put back in and used to hold the bumpers? Or would good fiberglass repair be strong enough?

    I would appreciate your thoughts.

  7. I had the St Louis Avanti owners/experts over to the house last weekend. Turns out the problem with the front parking lamps looks like an error when the restoration shop repaired the front fenders. When installing the parking lamp blocks, they flush mounted them, when they should have been recessed about 1/8 inch from the leading edge. They also mounted them upside down.

I guess now I have two choices; modify the lens to fit the smaller opening or use the Dremel to carve out a proper sized pocket to fit the correct lens'.

    What do you think?

  8. I'm wondering if the previous owner repaired the front wings using those, early 63, smaller turn signal repair blocks (or the restoration shop did). I found two extra repair blocks in a box of parts, with a $69.96 price tag on each one. This still leaves me looking for the smaller turn signal lens and holder.

Anyone have one to loan so I can recast it?

  9. Hi, I'm still going through all the boxes of parts on my new acquisition (63R-2303). I have found quite a few used and NOS amber and clear lenses, all of which appear too long and too wide for my front turn signal/parking light holes.

From glancing at on line catalogs, I assume the 63 had smaller front indicators?

If I can't locate a pair, can I borrow one to make a mould and casting?
