On the Studebaker Avanti R1 & R2 engines, when the marked teeth on the crankshaft gear and camshaft gear are properly aligned, the #6 cylinder is in the firing position……..True or False?

That's a good question!....I'm going to say TRUE!............. (although I'm actually inclined to think # 1 cylinder would be in firing position)

Ed thinks this is true. Any other thoughts here?

Answer is.................TRUE! Good job Ed. The Shop Manual is very clear on this, and I can attest that it's correct. :)

Thanks!...I was wondering about that, so just yesterday I located a  Stude V8 camshaft with gear still installed in my used parts stock.....I pointed the "0" on the cam gear straight down as if it were lined up with the  "0-0" on the crank gear.....then counted the lobes back to cylinder #6 and saw that both valves on #6 would have been closed, and that cylinder (#6) would be firing.
