mfg Posted July 3, 2017 Report Posted July 3, 2017 During Avanti production, Studebaker engineers realized there was a potential for an engine miss due to a clearance issue under the emission shielding......What was the source of that interference?
r1lark Posted July 4, 2017 Report Posted July 4, 2017 One of the spark plug cables sometimes contacts the upper terminal of the external resistor located on the ignition coil. The ignition shielding pushes this wire down onto the resistor and heat from the resistor causes the spark plug cable insulation to deteriorate rapidly, resulting in an engine miss. OK, I ain't this smart guys. I just happened to run across the Service Letter (J-1963-8) today when I was looking for something else. Sometimes you just get lucky.
