warren55
In what year did Bendix begin testing the Dunlop designed disc brake system that would eventually make it's way on to the Avanti? What was their initial concern with using disc brakes on a passenger car?
mfg
I'm going to take a shot at this....I'd say the Dunlop design that was eventually adopted by Studebaker came out on the 'XK' Jaguars, probably in '53-'54? And i'd guess the initial concern with using them on passenger cars was too much pedal effort? (And also the difficulty of using them at the rear with the complication of the needed parking brake)
Gunslinger
The main concern was what exposure to the elements would do to the calipers and rotors. Testing showed there was no ill effects.
warren55
Looks you've both done your homework. Testing began in 1954, and how disc brakes would perform in inclement weather was their initial concern. Gary Johnson just shared an excellent paper by J.L.Winge from Bendix with our club editor. I tried to attach a part of it, but this ridiculously limiting forum format will not allow me to!
