mfg Posted January 8, 2015 Report Posted January 8, 2015 A driveshaft 'slip joint' for a 1963 Avanti with auto trans will not interchange with one from an '83 Avanti with auto trans, but there is also a major design difference between the two 'slip joints'. What is this design difference?
mfg Posted January 10, 2015 Author Report Posted January 10, 2015 The number of splines ??? The number of splines are probably different, but that's not really the 'major' difference we're looking for here.....Anyone else?
Charlie Kile Posted January 10, 2015 Report Posted January 10, 2015 Probably a difference in diameter. Charlie RQB3921
mfg Posted January 10, 2015 Author Report Posted January 10, 2015 Probably a difference in diameter. Charlie RQB3921 The diameters probably are different.....but we're really looking for a 'night and day' type difference here!
Gunslinger Posted January 10, 2015 Report Posted January 10, 2015 Wouldn't an '83 have an overdrive GM HydraMatic compared to the Borg Warner PowerShift?
mfg Posted January 10, 2015 Author Report Posted January 10, 2015 Wouldn't an '83 have an overdrive GM HydraMatic compared to the Borg Warner PowerShift? Yes, the two year Avantis ('63 & '83) used completely different auto transmissions,.....but everything behind the trans was 'ABOUT' the same....except that darn slip joint!!..Any other thoughts on this one?
mfg Posted January 11, 2015 Author Report Posted January 11, 2015 Answer....The universal joint bearing cups are pressed into the driveshaft slip joint of a '63 Avanti,....On an '83 Avanti, the universal joint bearing cups are retained to the slip joint by means of individual metal 'straps' and bolts. (Two straps and four bolts per slip joint)
