During the twenty years ('63-'85) of Avanti production on the Studebaker chassis, improper door fit was 'built into' some models, and may not be possible to correct using the normal range of adjustments......True?

That may well be true as different lots of fiberglass will show different curing rates and would exhibit some variation as a finished product. Eventually you'll run into a car body and a door that have too much variation to match up properly.
