Regular Studebaker 289 V8 'dished' pistons can be substituted for use in an Avanti 'R' engine....but Avanti 'R' type pistons cannot be used in a regular Studebaker 289 V8 engine....True?

Flat top pistons in place of dished pistons? They would fit but the specs of the engine would be wrong for the designed use of the engine. There would be a mismatch in the timing, compression, combustion chambers, etc. it could be done, but why?
