mfg
Regular Studebaker 289 V8 'dished' pistons can be substituted for use in an Avanti 'R' engine....but Avanti 'R' type pistons cannot be used in a regular Studebaker 289 V8 engine....True? GAWen
True. It is due to the compression ratio.

Gunslinger
Flat top pistons in place of dished pistons? They would fit but the specs of the engine would be wrong for the designed use of the engine. There would be a mismatch in the timing, compression, combustion chambers, etc. it could be done, but why?

64Avanti
Of course it could be done. I did it back in 1967 when I rebuilt a 1960 Hawk engine to include a R1/R2 cam to increase the compression ratio.
