The Bendix-Dunlop disc brake, as found on Studebaker Avantis, used an early version of the now common 'sliding brake caliper'.....True?

No, they were fixed calipers. Thats why you must shim them centered over the rotor

Right!, The Dunlop calipers were bolted solid...a different ball game from the 'forgiving' sliding type.
