I just went from a 3.07 to a 3.31 rear axle in my '63 Avanti. I've always been terrible at math. To get my speedometer back into sync, do I need to replace the speedometer drive pinion with one with MORE or LESS teeth? (The speedo was accurate with the 3.07 axle)

Which transmission do you have...automatic or 4-speed? I'm assuming you don't have the 3-speed. According to the parts manual:

automatic - 20 teeth, part number 1544762 (3.31)

4-speed - 17 teeth, part number 1556036 (3.31)

A 3.07 would have 18 or 16 teeth for the automatic or 4-speed respectively. So...to answer your question...you need a pinion with more teeth. Contacting Myer's Studebaker, Nostalgic Motors or Studebaker International should get you the right piece.

Thank You very much.....I have a dozen or so new and used pinions, so hopefully I'll have the correct one here! (Automatic--20 teeth)

It doesn't appear from the parts manual that the different pinions are different colors like other manufacturers do...that makes identification simple.

Why don't I have this luck when I buy scratch tickets?.....Out of the 15 pinions I rounded up TWO were # 1544762.....20 tooth! Thanks again!
