Trunk lift gas struts....where to get new ones

Hello again.....on my '89 Avanti Convertible it has two gas struts to lift the trunk lid. The lid is pretty heavy and the struts have apparently given up enough of the ghost that they dont budge it.....so opening the trunk with the electric push button in the armrest console is a two person job! Can anyone give me some advice on where to get two new gas struts to lift the trunk lid? The units have the following numbers on them via blue stuck on labels: 4683 in the upper left hand corner of the little blue label on the strut tube and also 16706 in the upper right corner of same little blue label. Any advice on where to go to get two new ones?? tks again! Ed in Knoxville.

Places like Pep Boys, Auto Zone, NAPA and Advance Auto often stock a selection of gas struts. Either take measurements of yours, fully extended and closed, or take the strut itself in and match it up. There might be some internal valving differences, but these would probably be of little consequence.

Try Napaonline.com and they have a search feature where you enter a non-NAPA number and it will do an automatic cross-reference and see if there's an direct application to take out the guesswork. If it does, you can determine what car they were adapted from and let everyone else with an Avanti from that era what to use down the road when necessary.

Ed. I have a 89 Convert also and replaced my gas trunk struts at Auto Zone and they have the Avanti in their catalog. After installing the new struts we found out the trunk would still not release unless someone had their fingers under the bottom edge when the button was pushed. We still had to lift it 18 inches or so before the struts took over. HERE IS THE PROBLEM the trunk latch has to be adjusted a little tighter so it will pop loose when you push the button. You still will have to lift the lid until the struts take over. If your struts hold the lid open you dont need struts. I now have a extra pair.

For my 88 convertible that had a trunk lid that would not stay open I went to my Carquest and they matched mine to a StrongArm 4419. They did not have my Avanti in their computer.

RE: The trunk struts, my 89 convertible trunk lid doesn't open up all the way like the spring hinged 76 of mine. The struts will hold it open, but there doesn't seem to be any more travel left in the struts to get it any higher. I haven't measured it, but I bet the trunk lid only opens about 18-20 inches. Any other 89 owners have this?
