  1. Thank you for your response, it is a different column than a 63-64. The adapter is different and will not work on a earlier car. I do use a Nardi wheel on my Avanti but have never been able to get the horn to function. I have a wood and leather Nardi and switch steering wheels off for a different look and feel . Your steering wheel modification is great.

    Thanks again ,

    Bob

  2. I'm curious is the steering wheel adapter that you are using a Nardi piece or are you using a two piece adapter such as a Grant. The reason I ask is that I have never been able to use a Nardi wheel on a early Avanti steering column and also have a functioning horn.

    Thank you,

  3. I purchased this kit from Jon Myer and I also believe the weatherstrip was used on a mid 1980s Monte Carlo I do not know what year. The metal rail that attaches on the roof is etched with part numbers that appear to have been done at Avanti Motors. It appears that the A pillar portion of the rubber needs to be shaped quite a bit from the stock Monte Carlo rubber.

  4. While I do believe Avanti Motors used a molded Monte Carlo weatherstrip , I think it was modified to fit. I purchased a kit years ago and it included a extrusion that fit were the original rain gutter went and the Monte Carlo Rubber slid into the extrusion and was also glued onto the A pillar.  I have included some photos and it can be seen were the rubber was ground down to fit on the A pillar. Without the extrusion it could probably be made to work using screws and adhesives.

  5. Superformance builds many different cars including the Shelby CSX continuation Cobras series. The CSX cars are spot on to the feeling of a original Cobra and are capable of out performing a 1960s car because of today's new technology ( tires , shocks, engine development ) As much fun as it was to own an original Cobra there are so many cars available today that will run circles around it being built from a variety of makers.

    Happy New Year, Mike.

  6. What is interesting is that Sherwood Egbert had no idea who Ian Fleming was. Miss Rich who was a personal secretary to Mr. Egbert wrote the note on the border of the letter advising him that he was a famous author.

I had the pleasure of meeting her in Palm Springs many years ago at an Avanti meet.

  7. I was able to use the movie car that was depicted as the " Ken Miles " Cobra in the Ford versus Ferrari movie this weekend. I am in the automotive aftermarket so these opportunities are constant.

In the attached photo, there is a Avanti keeping the" movie star" Cobra company last night in my garage. There has always been an Avanti in my garage since 1963, no matter what size garage I would have. I just have a weakness for the Avanti.

  8. As a long term Avanti owner I always enjoy spotting one on the road or on film. I work in the automotive aftermarket and some friends of mine did construct all of the close up Cobras used in the movie. I was able to drive each of them at various publicity functions after the movie premiered. The attached photo is of me driving the "Dave Macdonald " Cobra from the movie. The photo was shot from the white " Ken Miles " Cobra that was also used in the filming while heading north on the San Diego freeway.

  9. Having driven my Avanti cross country in both the summer or 64 and 65 , I would have relished this cushion. I was 17 years old on the first trip and the seats were very uncomfortable.

I believe what you have was done to a very high quality in a custom shop. If it were a factory option it would have turned up before now, and many Avanti owners would have bought one, me included. Thank you for posting your pictures.

  10. As always everyone is entitled to their opinions, my Ford transmission was built for me by Jon Metzker, who is still around Orange County Studebaker happenings. There are a variety of bell housings available for the Ford family of transmissions but I do not know of any that would not work in a Avanti.  The 200r4 has powered many hi horsepower cars at the drags but some feel it is a inferior transmission.

Tweaking a R1 for off the line performance in my opinion is a waste of money. I raced a 383 powered Plymouth with my macho sounding exhaust and solid lifter cam making all the right noises. The result was the Plymouth blew my doors off ! The time October of 1963 with my brand new Avanti which I still own. I found other cars to purchase to go drag racing with. I love Avant'is and have never been without one but it takes big rear gears to launch one. I have several hi performance cars and have worked in the industry for the past 50 years.  My everyday driver is a Volkswagen Golf , plenty of performance at a cheap cost and blends in well with traffic in Southern Californi and it turns 14 seconds in  quarter mile.

  11. From my experience, I have a R1 Avanti with a FMX transmission done many years ago it it works well. Starts of in first rear and shifts perfectly into drive. These transmissions use a vacuum modulator for shift control rather than the stock Studebaker linkage control . Less problems smoother shifting.

I have another Avanti restomod with a Chevy engine and a 200r4 transmission. While not the latest state of the art automatic transmission it is a fine functioning overdrive that improves acceleration and provides a quiet cruising speed with a 3:25 rear gear.

I have noticed in a previous post your mention of high console and shifter heat.  If you are thinking about a trans swap, I would select the 200r4 as it will reduce highway RPM and if you are spending money it will not cost that much more over doing a FMX swap . If you do pull the transmission for either swap I recommend insulating the transmission tunnel with new technology heat product, between the transmission and the floorboard. Using Dynamat inside the car is fine for sound but not heat. I have had a twin turbo 700 horsepower engine at one time in my restmod and learned how to cure Avanti cooling and heat soak issues.
