  1. What are the correct steps to remove a Stude Air Conditioner compressor off a 64 R1. I see the 4 bolts on the compressor bracket, and 2 water manifold bolts and one large 7/16 at the front of the water manifold.

Does the idler pulley bracket bolt to the block somewhere or just the 2 bolts to the compressor? Thanks for any help.

  2. Looking for help with late 64 Claret Upholstery material and paint or dye for dashboard. Tried Stude International for dashboard dye/paint but no luck . Does anyone know of a material dye or paint or even a formula that matches this color? I find maroons are very hard to duplicate and just can't get it right as I need to change a roll bar cover to match interior and some touch up detail on a dash.

As for Upholstery, I have yards of panel weight, but no upholstery weight. 6 bucket seat bottoms but no tops, back seat sets, pleats and hinge covers but need some top halves or thick upholstery weight material. Will swap or buy outright.

With Avanti's finally getting some serious recognition in the car field, I am surprised that there is not to much available out there for original style interior restorations. Not picking on any material suppliers but I have yet to see a perfectly redone original style interior like Stude did them. The colors are off a bit or the grain is different or to many wrinkles when finished. Naugahyde is still being made but nothing that can fill our void. So many nice cars out there with little interior flaws that could be taken care of with the right products.

On the plus side I just purchased 5569 this past spring that seems to have been hidden for its entire life and shows only 36k miles on it and it may be correct as it is a very nice driving and tight car. I have owned 11 Avanti's over about 40 years and this ones a keeper for sure. But sure would like to fix up those little interior details.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

  3. While I was road testing my 64 Avanti today I got an unexpected downshift to 1st gear while I was in DRIVE. The car was still in second at the time it happened and

as soon as I let off on the gas while approaching a stop sign, it went to 1st causing the rear wheels to lock up. I put it neutral and it freed up from first. It did the same in 2 gear shift

position. When I placed it in 1 it was still in 2nd and seemed to stay there thru about 2500 RPM when I returned home and parked it. In D it keep downshifting whenever I let off the gas.

Any help greatly appreciated. Reading thru the manuals tonight!

  4. Dick,

Thanks for the response. I just got the Blue Ray Version of the Studebaker Museums Avanti; Americas Most Advanced Automobile. What is great is the picture is better then the YouTube version plus there is a nice section on the January 63 attempt with Andy and the gang. They also show a black 63 GT Hawk on the salt, 2 red Avanti's and 1 Gold. I also found an

old version of a movie called Chase the Wind that has a few clips from the October 63 Stude runs. Back in the early 70's AOAI would lend out 8mm films of these events but where are they now?

Also do you think one of the red cars on the early runs is an earlier version of the R5? In about 1970 or 1971 I saw a red Avanti at the Avanti II factory with a roll cage in it outside for sale

during the Stude meet. I think it was one of Andys red bombers.

  5. I have available a number of nos seat covers for a 64 Avanti with the claret colored upholstery. 5 bucket bottoms, 3 back seat tops and bottoms, full set of door and r/q panel pleats and some panel weight material. I'm looking for a bucket seat top half in claret if anyone has one. Items for sale or trade. Pix available.

  6. While driving my automatic Avanti, I experienced a big clunk, just before the car came to a complete stop at an intersection. While giving it gas to get moving it felt like the emergency brake was on and the car was stressing to move. I paused and slipped it into reverse and it felt like it freed up and I was able to drive off. It is now doing that at almost all stops and i drove around in low and experienced the same problem. I'm pretty sure what the problem may be but would like to hear from anyone else who has experienced a similar condition.

    Thanks,

    Luma

  7. I have been lucky enough to find a NOS pair of Cibie driving lights as used on Early RQA style Avanti II's. This is the style as used on the cover of the second Avanti book by John Hull. I was wondering if someone who has this option on their Avanti can send me a picture of where and how they are mounted to the car? I like how the fit right under the headlight and want to keep the proper alignment. Any help greatly appreciated. Luma

  8. I saw a great video of the original R5 Avanti racing at Bonneville in 1963 posted on YouTube.

1st car shown is the gold #9 Avanti. Please note the plumbing in the back window area.

    Watch for the red Avanti!

My question does any one out there have any other footage of the 1963 Bonneville Record Runs?

It looks like maybe Ashland or Valvoline was doing some filming.

I remember back in the late 60's films were offered to Club members for meetings. I saw the 62 Avanti at Bonneville then.

I was told if you see numbers on the Avantis, you are watching the 63 footage. Anyone have the original videos?

If the link above above does not work type in " 1963 Studebaker Bonneville " in the You Tube search.

Sorry to say there is no sound but its still a great clip and has great resolution! Enjoy, Luma

  9. AVANTIFAN

I am interested in your woodgrain parts.

One thing I have to tell you is I have seen 3 different versions of the wood grain parts all on different Studebaker Avanti's.

My only question do all match in color and grain?

Contact me at Schlumpfbrothers "at" yahoo.com

    Thanks,

    Luma
