  1. I did a little research and found a heater blower motor identical to the old one in my 1980 Avanti. Only difference was the connectors on the wires which i modified to fit the original plug connector. Even the wire colors were correct for the 2 speeds.

Price $89.96 on Amazon. Maybe I could have gotten it cheaper elsewhere

I found it on Amazon but i am sure it can be had other places. It was made for a 1960-65 Falcon, 1964-65 Mustang and a 1965 Comet without A/C.

The one i bought was made by Auto Krafters, part number CODZ-18527A but as long as you  get one for one of these cars, you should have the correct one.

Have any of you found a good replacement for the original evaporator core for the Avanti?

Mine is a 1980 but they all should be the same through 1985.

    Thanks

FYI, I fixed my evaporator with copper tubing from Home Depot and Ace.

    works well!

That seems a little high.  Naturally the air passing through the core won't match the core temperature, but it should be in the mid-high 40's with an outside tempurature of the mid 80's.  Usually a 40 degree difference is considered good.  You should be checking the air tempurature on medium fan speed also, rpms at 2,000 if in the garage.

Well, outside temps here are always in the 90s during the Summer months.

Are you running the oem reostat resistor type fan switch or the current 3 speek switch?  On ours, I replaced the old reostat switch with the 3 speed switch, the same compressor as yours and it cools the car just fine (here is central Texas).  With the evap in the 30's, the only thing that needs to happen is to be sure the fan is running at correct speeds.  Also, check and be sure you don't have any leaks at the firewall and fresh air vents, letting hot outside air in.

no leaks and running the 3 speed switch. While the evaporator gets down to the high 30s, the air coming out of the vents is in a 50s I also have a fan blowing into my condenser at idle

  5. Well, I replaced my compressor with the same one you guys used and also a parallel flow condenser and new receiver dryer.

Driving down the highway, the evaporator will get down to the high 30s F but it is still at best only marginal to keep the car comfortable on max fan speed.

Any ideas? Is if just poor insulation or too much glass or what? I tried to have the rear window tinted but they said the defroster was peeling away and the could not do it.

    What have others done?

    Thanks

The right side of the core sticks into a hole in the right of the car under the A-pilar. The left side of the core sticks into the cardboard duct (number 22 in the exploded view). Because the left and right side of the core stick into a hole, there is no way getting it out. So, you will have to remove one more screw holding the cardboard duct. I believe this screw is on the left side of the cardboard duct (under the steering wheel).

That is what I have found also. I did not know about that other screw. I will search for it tomorrow weather permitting.

All this to deal with a squeaky fan motor but at least i wont need it until Autumn.

    Thanks

  7. Anybody?????

so, i finally an getting around to removing the heater box. I have removed the hoses, removed the 4 bolts holding the motor and removed the one at the kick panel and even the heater valve but i cannot get it out. It seems looser but not enough to remove it.

    What am i missing?

  10. thanks for the replies.

I pulled off the carpet and removed the panel Now, i cannot get the fitting going to the evaporator off using all the strength i had and a 12" long wrenches.

The expansion valve fittings were easier.

Guess i will have to figure out how to remove the whole box with the fan and the evaporator

  11. My expansion valve on a 1980 is bad so I need to replace it. Do any of you know if it is an O-ring style or a flare fitting?

Also, how to access it? Cant figure out how the console side panel is attached. Probably some screws but can find then when digging through the carpet.

    Thanks
