The 1983 Avanti Owners Manual does not specify max safe rpm, nor does the tach have a redline marker. I've never had a car with a GM 5.0 (though their 5.0 boat tngine of that vintage redlines at about 4,400).

I know the old Studebaker R-2 redlined at 6,000 but I doubt this 5.0 goes that high.

I would think there should be an emissions sticker under the hood with the engine desgination on it. If you can find that do a search for GM engine specs for that engine. It should tell you want you want. I'm not sure, but if that's a Camaro engine you can look it up that way.

If you can find no sticker under the hood, you'll have to get the engine codes stamped in the block and find the information out by them.

HI MIKE ,

5000 RPM is about l you will get out of a stock 305's They were set up for low end torque not high rpm HP.

It's probably the same one that originally came with your car. The "1983" on mine is rubber-stamped on the cover, not printed. Not much useful info. The usual emissions boilerplate, fluid change intervals, grease points listed, fluid specs, that sort of thing.

The engine could probably spin to 5,000 RPM without hurting itself but whether or not you'll make power up to that point or achieve that RPM is another matter.
