mtgibby Posted January 15, 2017 Report Posted January 15, 2017 I have started to install the wiring harness/loom from YnZ. I am also ready to install the fuel tank. Is there a desired order? Tank first? Thanks, Mike
dynolou2 Posted January 16, 2017 Report Posted January 16, 2017 We are at this point with Avanti R1001, tank first then wiring , you may be able to route the trunk wiring thru the access hole leaving some slack as the sending unit wiring goes to the top center of the tank. Lou Cote
mtgibby Posted January 17, 2017 Author Report Posted January 17, 2017 Thanks Lou. I installed the tank yesterday and started running the wires as well. I will post some pictures soon. Do you have a website where we can follow the progress on R1001?
dynolou2 Posted January 18, 2017 Report Posted January 18, 2017 No website, but some pictures are posted to Avanti facebook. Lou Cote
mtgibby Posted January 19, 2017 Author Report Posted January 19, 2017 Here is a pic of the tank installed. I took me a while to figure out what the two extra wires coming off the fuel tank lead. Turns out they are for the rear speaker, which my Avanti never had.
mtgibby Posted January 19, 2017 Author Report Posted January 19, 2017 I also mounted the fuel filler. I was warned (thanks Brad!), to make sure the cap parked at the 1 and 7 o'clock position to availed interference with the filler door.
JWL1940 Posted January 19, 2017 Report Posted January 19, 2017 Mike, Unimogjohn over on the AACA site posted a comprehensive blog when he was working on his Avanti. You may want to go back and re-read it as there is much valuable information. Your project is looking good and good progress too.
mtgibby Posted January 19, 2017 Author Report Posted January 19, 2017 I have been slowly making my way through unimogjohn's blog when I get a chance. Right now I'm up to Jan 2012! It is cool to see John and Gregs progress, even if it is years time late.
lschuc Posted January 20, 2017 Report Posted January 20, 2017 Mike, Brad has a special wrench he made that will make it easier to attach the nuts on the fuel door.
JWL1940 Posted January 22, 2017 Report Posted January 22, 2017 Just found the trunk light in R4541. I went looking for it after viewing the above posts. It is non-functional, but look forward to getting it working again. According to the wiring diagram it seems the light is on the backup light circuit. I'll verify further. The switch is still on the trunk lid. Should be fun getting it to illuminate again. Thanks! (o[]o)
lschuc Posted January 23, 2017 Report Posted January 23, 2017 After you check the bulb, most likely the problem is in the mercury switch in line on the wiring, probably attached to a trunk hinge bolt. They are not rebuildible, but a good electronics supply store should have a new mercury switch.
JWL1940 Posted January 23, 2017 Report Posted January 23, 2017 Thanks, start from the bulb and socket and work my way back. This should be a fun job. Nothing like making a light light up. (o[]o)
JWL1940 Posted January 25, 2017 Report Posted January 25, 2017 The bulb and switch were bad. I rigged a manual switch in place of the mercury switch so I could operate the light at will. The ground to the light is switched and comes from the parking light circuit. I may go to Fry's this afternoon and see if they have a mercury type switch I can use. The one I Installed functions but not the most attractive. It's all about looking good. (o[]o)
JWL1940 Posted January 26, 2017 Report Posted January 26, 2017 Found a non-Mercury tilt switch at Fry's. May redo the manual switch to improve appearance as I like the operate at will over the automatic function. (o[]o)
lschuc Posted January 26, 2017 Report Posted January 26, 2017 Here's a link to the non-mercury tilt switch: http://www.frys.com/product/7825579 Here is a mercury tilt switch: http://www.frys.com/product/1908343
