1983 Avanti II trunk will not latch.

1983 Avanti II trunk was hesitant to open but after three tries with the glove box switch it opened. But now it will not latch back.  The rotating mechanism appears to be stuck to the passenger side of the trunk. I tried Kroil to loosen it up but that did not work. I think the metal latch needs to rotate back to the driver side but I do not want to force it. I

Well, I did not figure how how to release the latch w/o the switch but when I pushed the switch more firmly it flipped the mechanism open.

Remove the cover and put Vaseline on a folded brown bag and run it between all moving parts to lube and clean all sliding parts. Did this to my car about 8 years ago and have not had a problem since.
