Gunslinger
Most post-Studebaker Avantis I've seen have a date of manufacture on the drivers side door post under the lock receiver. It should be a large sticker stating the car meets all applicable standards (other than some possible exemptions) at the time of manufacture with the date showing. R4949
The Avanti II with this s/n is listed as 1984, but my directory shows RQB numbers thru 1985. The AAV numbers seem to start in 1987. I am curious when a car doesn't match the list.
Gunslinger
If I'm not mistaken, it was about 1981 when the government mandated the seventeen digit VIN for vehicles and the identifier would be assigned by the government. Avanti Motors may have had a waiver for a period of time to comply. The "AAV" is the identifier for Avanti Motors and would have begun at that point. The RQB and a few later RQ sequences were simply in-house accounting vehicle identifiers after that, but were no longer VIN numbers.
