kellyavanti
Just doing some checking on fluids on my "new" 63 Avanti and wondered what to top up the manual steering box with.
adamderosa
The shop manual says to use 80 or 90 weight gear oil. I use the older spec 90 wt GL-1 oil available at NAPA.
PackardV8
Unless they've been rebuilt, most steering box output shaft seals are so worn they won't hold 80-90w gear oil. I've seen it poured in and all be a puddle on the garage floor the next morning. If that's the case, try 140w. If that leaks out, the box should really be rebuilt. Having said that, when in CASO mode, I've tapped the fill plug for a zerk, pumped it full of moly grease and driven it for another twenty years. jack vines
