CommanderToasty
What is different about the Avanti 289 that gives it 240 hp over the standard 63 Studebaker 289? Are there specs somewhere on the non-Avanti engine so I can compare to what is in my Avanti manual?
Gunslinger
Between an R1 and a standard Studebaker 289, the differences are basically increased compression ratio for the R1, flat-top pistons in place of dished, increased camshaft lift, 4-barrel carburetor, dual-point distributor and maybe a few other changes. The changes made for roughly a fifteen horsepower increase to 240 for the R1. I don't have the tune-up specs for a non-Avanti engine but they should be easily available. PackardV8
Raising compression from 8.5 to 10.25 Increased camshaft duration and stiffer valve springs Dual point distributor. Everything else was pretty much the same as far as horsepower production. The improved pan ventilation and the heavy duty front damper were needed because the Avantis mostly came with the 3.73 rear gear. This had them spinning higher RPMs. jack vines
