avantinet Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 I have a 63 R 1 that the brake lights no longer work. I replaced the stop light switch to no avail. I checked what wiring I could get to and the tail light bulbs. Anyone have any suggestions?
Gunslinger Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 Check the fuse...it has a separate fuse. If that's OK, use a test light to see if the tail lights are even getting power when the brake pedal is depressed. It could also be as simple as both bulbs having one filament being burned out. The wires to the rear lights come up through the drivers side of the trunk, so if both lights are out (and the bulbs themselves are good), the problem is before the wires reach the left tail light assembly. It could be a bad ground somewhere along the way. You may have a bad sending unit...even a new one. If you do have a sending unit issue, the best and most reliable fix is to install a mechanical sending unit under the dash...less than $10 in parts and about an hour of your time. Stan Gundry's book on the Avanti has the instructions...quite easy to do. I'm thinking the problem is most likely either another bad sending unit or a bad fuse.
