  1. gunslinger, can you elaborate what was different about what blake used for body material vs what was used previously? it seems that the formulas for smc glass have changed a number of times since the 70's. my real concern is having anything "ghosting" thru the top coat because the body wasn't prepped properly for the type of glass used.

  2. change the wording in my original post from i "know" to i "thought" that early avantis were gel coated. as was just explained to me by a friend who has been in the fiberglass repair business for many years the "primer" that was used had a resin content that acted as a sealer for the raw fiberglass but was not what he considers a true gel coat and didn't work as well as the real thing. possibly an effort in cost savings?

  3. i know that earlier avantis were gel coated and need to know if this was true for the blake cars that were painted with a different type of paint than previously used. would also be helpful to know if anyone here has actually stripped the paint from an '83 and what process was used. thank you!

  4. i know this has been done before but what are the current opinions on where to go to for a quality set that fits and will last? a good price would be an extra, but i'd rather spend a little more and get the "good oats" that haven't been thru the horse already. thanks

  5. having had at least one avanti continuously for the last 40 odd years, i thought i had heard all the "stories". today as my wife and i exited a store and made our way to our car, (an '83) we were greeted by an older fellow who was waiting to chat with whomever owned the car. he started with "what a great looking studebaker", when i explained it was actually an avanti, 20 years removed from studebaker he asked if it was fiberglass. when i told him that all avantis were glass he informed me that the 1st 200 avantis were MADE OF METAL and given away by studebaker as "gifts". when i said that i kind of doubted that he said he had the book that proved it. then he asked if "the two young guys" who built some of the avantis in california had been able to keep the company afloat. that was our signal to move on; i explained that we were late for an appointment and left. it was a great day learning this new information and i thought it imperative to pass it along the proper channels.

  6. i kind of had an idea that blake changed the script, what threw me off was that my '83 has the plain style while the later plastic bumper car i mentioned has the early script. perhaps those times were like the henry ford days of using what you came up with at the moment you needed it with no consistency.

  7. my '83 has a different type or font script then i have seen . i have access to '63, '64, '66 and '76 cars and all have what we are all used to, with the "tail" of the V extended and the stylish dot over the I. my '83 is very plain, no extension or dot. the back cover of aoai #170 has a picture of what appears to be an '84 with steve blake touting goodyear tires. the script is as we are used to. a search of past issues was not successful in turning up any script pictures like mine, regardless of year. i'm just curious as to the difference, perhaps when they were used and why.

  8. i have what i think are a pair of n.o.s. wiper arms, the tag on them is #1351033 but that could have been added to anything. they were made by trico and are unpolished stainless. i see that s.i. is selling a polished arm under that number. the question is were the originals made by trico and were they polished or not? thanks for your feedback!

  9. i first joined aoai way back in 1977 when i bought #5317. took her apart in 1980, got interested in hot rods, and have been out of the avanti culture for many years. i never sold my '64 and in the last year have been avanti reborn and have decided to do an off frame restoration. i also bought a real decent, albeit, lousy paint '76 with what appears to have 34k original miles on it. there used to be a cross reference for available over the counter parts by dusty richardson. does anything like this exist today for either car, or both? appreciate any help you folks can give me. thanks, george perry in vermont.
