  1. Hi trek34l,

    Sorry for your loss.

Rumor is that tere are about 35 to 50 transition cars. As they ran out of 63 parts . They started using 64 stuff, My 64 R4832 has the 63 heater controls, but has the small pirate buckels on the door panels. Did not understand the sway bar thing??

  2. From what I can tell the switches were made by Cutler-Hammer which is now a division of Eaton. That switch design is no longer available but I have used others, matt black instead of gloss etc.

The power window switches in my '87 look like P/N 1750759 from www.avantiparts.net.

Most of my power window problems were caused by loose wires in the door. If one of the windows is working try trading switches to see if the bad window starts to work. If not you are looking at a motor or wiring issue. The ground in the door is an issue also.

    THANKS GUYS. :D

  3. Open question. Does any one know what the power windows rocker switches came from??? <_< In the LSC's or 88 models.

I believe thats where My problem is.Cleaned the contacts in them. yesterday. Its better ,but I think its only a temporary fix. :(

  4. DAD GUM GOOFY THING. <_< STARTED WORKING THIS AFTER NOON. :) THE CIRCUT BREAKER IS ON THE FUSE BLOCK. MAY CHANGE IT JUST BECAUSE ITS EASY TO GET TO AND NO WAY TO CHECK IT UNDER LOAD. bUT VOLTAGE ONLY DROPS A TENTH OR TWO WHEN THE WINSDOWS ARE USED. THANKS AGAIN FOR THE HELP. :D

  5. Look for the circuit breaker. Replace it and make sure it's located away from the heat. If it's located in the engine bay where Studebaker originally put it, they learned the heat would affect it. The '63 R1 I used to own had the problem and I relocated the breaker to under the dash.

Thanks, :) will check that out. I believe its on the fuse block panel. but I will check

  6. Have any of you ? Run in to a intermittents failure of the windows. :( Won't go up or down? They may work one day and not the next? Have checked all of the power and ground connections. All good, even replaced the relay. But It still happens from time to time. <_<

  7. I live in California, so we dont have a "winter", its really just to seasons,

summer and summer with rain. Prior to buying my new wheels a year

and a half ago, the Avanti sat outside all the time (years). Recently its

been in the garage getting ready for shows, and more recently because

the power steering took a dump. I need to get a new cover for it ....

any suggestions? I was figuring a 65-68 Mustang Fastback cover? ;)

They sell covers for Avantis. :) Pick your poison $69 on up $250 <_<

  8. You can still have a Dana 44, and independent suspension as well, in your Avanti. Here is a Viper differential, which is a Super Dana 44. It is matched to aluminum half shafts, stainless cambers bars, and aluminum tie rods. The outboard knuckles are Corvette, with C5 dual piston calipers. The overall width is in the vicinity of 58/58 1/2" , same as the original Avanti.

Most high end rear drive cars have independent rear ends. Mercedes, BMW, Lexus. I'm unsure what the negatives are, unless you are an all out drag car. There are a number of postives, one of them being less unsprung weight.

If you want you can just purchase the Viper adapter plate, and do the work yourself.

It does require a modification to the floor pan under the rear seat for the 4 link attachment.

Here is the tag that we found under the sand cast rear housing after we polished it smooth.

  9. I just got my Shop Manual on CD.

:)Good news - the ignition switch is easily removed from the dash.

:(Bad news - the lock cylinder requires the key to remove it from the switch.

"To remove the lock cylinder from the switch,

insert the key the key in the lock and turn it to the 'ON'

    position. ..."

Sort of sounds like a Catch-22 situation. You need the lock cylinder to have a key made but you need a key to get the lock cylinder out of the switch.

:)Good news - I guess if I can get the ignition switch to a locksmith, he can pick the lock and turn it to the 'ON' position and remove the lock cylinder.

:)Good news - delivering the ignition switch to the locksmith eliminates the cost of a housecall, hopefully reducing $$$.

Do three Goods outweigh 1 Bad. Let's hope so!

You can buy a whole key assembly from studebaker international..Maybe talk to them about the doors

  10. Hi this is my first post here. My mom has a 1963 Avanti. I am currently bulding a model of it as a birthday present for her. I want to make it pretty detailed, but I can't go over there and start looking under the hood, or she might get suspicious (it is a surprise after all). Does anyone have some good pics of the Avanti engine? Mainly I want to see how the overflow tank is plumbed. I know that a hose comes from the radiator to the front of the tank, but does the overflow tank have a hose that runs to the engine, and if so where? Also how/where are the heater core hoses routed.

    Any help is greatly appeciated!

    Does this help

  11. Interesting how they state its got 18 inch wheels, but the 03/04 Cobra wheels

they are using are 17 inch. The company that I told them to get the knockoffs

from "AFS Wheels" makes the 18 inch version. The Ford factory ones were only

    17 x 9, not 18 x 9. They where only made for 03/04. Sounds like even MORE

proof that they used the info from my email!! Also, the last Avanti Magazine

with the feature on the new Avanti clearly showed the rims the donor Mustang

comes with, and they are NOT the wheels shown below. I should contact AFS,

have a chat with Samantha & see if they are getting orders from Mexico? ;)

    Heres coupe shot Karl :

I MAY HAVE TO HAVE ONE OF THOSE! :D

  12. I am putting aftermarket wheels on my 63 Avanti and was wondering what widths and backspacing seem to work the best. I definately want wider then stock tires in the back. It has the steeltech disc on the fronts and I'm working on corvette discs on the rear ( i think the rotor will act as a .5" spacer on the rear). According to my calculations a 7" wide wheel with 5-5.5" backspace will work. I think that is about a 2" pos. offset? Anybody out there every done this? I ordered a set of american racing rodmaster wheels, 15x7 4" BS but they stick way out. I don't want to make the mistake of ordering wrong wheels again.

You can run as much as 6" BS on the rear. its a close fit ,but it does clear.Have used 15x10 wheels on rear. now running 20x8.5. would have prefered20x9.5 . but no one was making them at the time.
