  1. Thanks!

Although I just had an oh crap moment after shuffling through some more photos...forgot to add the rear view mirror on the dash. Have to fix before hand. Oops!

The mirror is mounted above the dash about 8"

  2. The idea of shopping carts and uncaring customers banging into my baby totally creeps me out! According to a book I've read, there were only 158 cars made that model year. This amazes me! The car is just stunning! I open my garage door and there it is, I still can't believe it! Sometimes, I'll go downstairs just to look at it. Well, sorry to wax so euphoric. thanks for listening!

The Avanti BUG bites another.....Congrats., On your new car and trophy. Enjoy...

  3. Hey Karl, I sent you an e-mail. Do you want to sell your bra?

    Hi Paul ,

Sent you a couple of more pictures. But not sure they got sent? No you dont have to take any thing off. The Bra has straps for everything that goes around something. It is a very well thought out unit.

  4. Karl... forgive my ignorance, but why did you change from a 200R4 to a 700R4?

If I knew then what I know now. Would still have a 200r4. Didnt have alot of info back then on the 200r4. And knew of several 700R4's that were being used in HiPo cars. But we broke Three before getting it right. Car leaves unbelievably hard with the lower 1st gear. The big drop into second is well covered by the Nitrous. In hind sight the 200 would have been a better choice. But I tossed the 305 for a 350. Now looking for a 3" crank to make a 302 out of it. Always doing something. Got a NACA duct to get more fresh air in the car today. Will mount it above the the parking lights.

  5. Since my posting, I called one of the transmission companies called "Monster Transmissions" and spoke to the tech rep.

The outcome, based on the 3:07 differential, the 350 engine, and a 3500 lb. car, the advantage in the city (Los Angeles traffic!) estimate was "Maybe 2 mpg at the most."

Does this fit anyone's expectation who has installed the TH700R 4-speed?

Anyone with a post-1982 Avanti that has the factory installed 4-speed automatic and what is your mileage in the city?

Obviously, the cost will be at least $800+ for the trans and then the installation cost of $$$??. I know I won't be able to do this one in the driveway.

At 60 MPH, my Avanti is turning 2900 RPMs --- BIG difference with the Tacoma truck at 1800 RPM.

    Many thanks.

    Wendell

    Wendell,

I have a 88LSC with a 350cid 700R4. The ultra lo first gear will help your Avanti step out. Even with the 3.07 gears. Thou the .70 OD may lug it down a tad. Its going to think it has 2.14's in fourth gear. I can get 22-24 mpg if I keep it legal on the hiway, not very often.About 15-17mpg in town. converted from a 200R4 for about $1200.

  6. Yes, that is exactly what I am looking for. I don't need it for the Bristol Studebaker show that I talked about before, because I'm going to take my 1977 Avanti instead of my 1981 but I'd like to have one by the Lancaster Studebaker Meet in August, since I'm taking the 81 to that. Where did you get that one?

    Paul

I dont remember. But you can use it, See if it will work for you .Just pluged in new computer so my e-mails not working till tomorrow. to get and address.. I should be home about 3:00 PST

  7. Does anyone here know where i can purchase a bra for an Avanti? I called Nostalgic and they don't sell them anymore. I'm going on a 500+ mile trip to Bristol Tennessee for a Studebaker car show and want to put one on for the trip down there to protect the front end from paint chips. Also, if anyone has any experience with them, how hard is installation?

Is this what you need Avanti R1? And or how soon?Just kind of layed it in place. But I can strap in down and take more pictures of the mounting points.

  8. [ Personally, I think wheel flares also add a 3 dimensional affect that would improve the look (but then you know my sentiment on that as I'm incorporating them into my 4-door).

    Interesting question to ponder.

Flares are a hard thing to do on the Avanti. Because of there shape. Not that they can't be done. getting the upper half to fit (look) right is difficult.

  9. Can I request to see some pix of your car's? I 'd love to see what the people out here have.

One more thing guys. I know sometime's these things shouldn't be asked on boards. But curious minds wonder. How much do you guys consider this car to be worth? Before and after resto?

    Thanks

    Nester..........

    Here are mine. 64 R3 clone w/Nitrous, 63 Twin Supercharged, 88 LSC#21 Supercharged 350 & nitrous

  10. Thanks for checking in!

Are you saying, like a piece of pipe to fit over the bushing and then a socket or something to slip inside the pipe? I could see that. I will keep you posted.

Bill, if what you come up with dosent work. e-mail me I will pull one and take picture of my method. B)

One set of pictures will equal thousand words..lol

  11. Is there any good way to install new trailing arm bushings? I tried heating them in boiling water & using silicone grease....yeh,right!

Also, does anyone repro the little metal tags for the rear axle covers?

    Thanks!

Bill, Your talking about the Traction bar bushing. You can squeeze them in place with a vice. Using a piece of material the same dia. That will push them 3/4's of the way thru. then Smack the bushing with a mallet the rest of the way. As for the little tags. Try Meyers Studebaker.

  12. For as long as I have owned this car (1988) the vent air is HOT in the summer and I actually use it to WARM the vehicle in the Winter. Now I am getting the smell of antifreeze thru the vents BUT only AFTER the temp. reaches 160 degrees. I don't think it's the heater core (hope not) no leakage. Cannot find any leaks under the hood, but the vapor seems to be drawn in from the outside - SO where is the AIR INTAKE for the heater core box?

    Bill D

It is located in the passenger side fender well. you will need to remove the plastic liner thing they hve . belive its held in plce with four screws. there should be a opening about four inches in dia.covered by a wire screen.I used some dryer duct to increase the fresh air. still working on a inlet piece. for now I have stuck in my fog lite opening. this was a great improvement in air flow in the car! It also removed the engine smells. Hope this helps. I have a LSC

  13. Can anyone recommend any good books, products etc. on fiberglass body repair?

Is there products to stay away from that may not be compatible with the fiberglass used in my '87 Avanti?

I have a crack I need to repair in the front fender and a hole at the drivers door sill where the fiberglass is thin. Also is there a metal support around the rear window that moisture can rust causing the fiberglas to pop up between the rear window glass lower corner and the trunk?

    Thanks and Merry Christmas

    Jim Wood

    Jim,

A boat shop or auto paint supply. Will have most every thing you will need. Have fun. :)

  14. My 1971 Avanti is really upsetting the Green Peace folks with her dirty exhaust. I have replaced the Carburator, Spark Plugs and Wires, Reset the timing, leaned out the carb, New Vacuum lines (thus no leaks), new distributor cap and rotor. Cylinder compression is 145 + in all cylinders. I have got to get this beast to pass the smog test, and idesa ??? George Wendell BrownWtrSailr@aol.com

A new Cat. will clean up most anything. I got one from Summit Racing. Hope this helps

  15. Hi

I have a 63 Avanti with an RS2 motor , when I change the oil and filter and put in 5 quarts of oil it reads low on the stick . The stick says 5 quarts on it . My question is does it take 6 ?

Any input would be great .

    Thanks

    Brian

Five in the pan.One in the filter ;)

  16. Tom, I'm old enough to remember that horsepower ratings were drastically revised between the build dates of those two cars. The R-1 hp was measured at the flywheel of an engine which had none of its accessories attached. The 83 cars' power is measured at the rear (drive) wheels. I do remember driving an R-1 in 1963 before committing to ordering the 1964 R-2. My brother's 62 Impala SS (300hp 327 w 4-speed manual) blew it right off the road.

For my use, any modern GMPP 5.7 would make the blower unneeded, but it'll be interesting to see what kind of performance I can get with the 5.0 and Paxton. If equivalent to the old R-2, that'll be fine.

Your car should run about 15 flat @95 mph in Qtr mile. A chip will help the lazyness off the line. bring Ets down to about 14.8 @98mph

  17. The 1983 Avanti Owners Manual does not specify max safe rpm, nor does the tach have a redline marker. I've never had a car with a GM 5.0 (though their 5.0 boat tngine of that vintage redlines at about 4,400).

I know the old Studebaker R-2 redlined at 6,000 but I doubt this 5.0 goes that high.

    HI MIKE ,

5000 RPM is about l you will get out of a stock 305's They were set up for low end torque not high rpm HP.
