  1. a non-official observation of Saturday (and a non-owner...my dad has an 88 Avanti).

Saturday the weather was perfect for an Avanti show. I arrived shortly after 11:30 and the final judging was taking place. All 6 eras were represented (Studebaker, Avanti II, Blake, Kelly (part 1), caifaro, and Kelly (part 2), some more than others (as well as a Studebaker Transtar flatbed, a Hawk and a gran turismo). Each era having its own row

I was surprised to see at least around 5 supercharged Studebaker Avantis R1s and R2s. Loved the futuristic knobs and airplane inspired overhead buttons on both the studebakers and IIs.

Blake's prototype 5 speed was on location as well as 4 other nearly identical black Avantis (others were auto).

There was 2 88-89s with black out trim up top, which was a great look, especially on the red exterior/interior 89 with ground effects/fog lights.

2 4-doors (1 white, 1 blue) and a gorgeous white '91 convertible (my best in show). I had never seen a 91 before and I feel this design was RIGHT! It was interesting how the "coke bottle" curve on the side was accentuated and I found the front end's softened "fins" nearly perfect.

About 8 2002-2007 Avantis were on hand as well.

I'd say there were around 35-40 cars there. This was a little disappointing, as I had hoped there would be quite a few more. Overall a good time was had and many stories were shared.....

  2. Take a look back at the Stephen Blake Avanti racing program. More info can be found at The avanti dot com. It looks like the "escort" Avanti at the bottom has wheel bulges rather than flares. Plus there is an interesting upward slope to the rear of the top Avanti. It would be interesting to get more and different angles on these 2 cars. It also begs the question WHERE ARE THEY NOW? (boarded up in the mexico plant?)

  3. The avanti soap opera continues......

    Here is something interesting.....

"One of the key industry executives joining Kelly's new operation is David Sharples, formerly director of MG-Rover in England, who has been appointed President of Avanti Motors. Avanti will continue as a U.S. auto manufacturer based in Morrow, Georgia and has recently opened a new sales and distribution center near Atlanta's Hartsfield airport from where Fred Blum, former vice president of Sales for Saleen, will direct all North American sales and marketing operations."

  4. What happened to the updated avantimotors.com site?

It was online for a while when Avanti disappeared from Georgia. Now Avanti is back up and running in Mexico yet the new site is nowhere to be found. At least they could start with the website which is probably the lowest cost of all advertising mediums.

One could hope they would show the car in Houston, which isnt that far from cancun (If they need someone to drive a car up from Cancun, I'll do it!) Although Houston doesnt have an avanti dealership (but we do have lotus, lamborghini, ferrari, bently) and if those arent limited production cars, I dont know what is.....

  5. This is a copy of an article from the Villa Rica Voice March 28,2006

The city of Villa Rica has agreed to buy the building that currently houses Avanti Motors off Bankhead Highway downtown. The city plans to centralize most of its operations at that location.

The Avanti facilities are being vacated after the company assembled its cars here for several years.

The city of Villa Rica has approved spending $1 million plus six acres of city-owned land in the Industrial Park for the Avanti facility. Mayor Jay Collins said that he will appoint a committee to recommend improvements to the property while City Manager Bob Zellner divides the 125,000 square foot facility into spaces for various city offices.

Collins said that virtually all city offices will move downtown, including city hall, the library, public works and the city’s motor pool operations. Collins said that the city will spend $1.5-2 million to renovate the property, which was a sock mill at one time.“We will secure bids on remodeling after the committee makes its recommendation,” Collins said. “The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) will certainly have input on the aesthetics of the final design.”

When improvements are complete and city offices begin their move downtown, Collins said that the city will sell the current city hall, which began life as a bank office in the late 1970s.Collins said that moving downtown was natural given the revitalization the area has undergone over the past several years.

“I think it is ironic that about the time the DDA began to take a hard look at making downtown a better place, the city moved to the outskirts,” Collins said. “I regard this move as an investment in continuing to make downtown vital again.” With the move, the only city offices not located downtown will be the Recreation Department, which will remain at Gold Dust Park in the city’s west Industrial Park. The move will take 5-7 years to complete
