"One of the more interesting lots offered by Auctions America was the Studebaker pictured above: a 1963 Avanti that had been presented to 1962 Indy 500 winner Roger Ward. Production delays prevented Roger from receiving the car on race day, but there’s another twist to the whole story. What was originally presented to the open wheel racer was an Avanti equipped with a supercharger, which did not permit the installation of air conditioning. Reportedly, Roger intended to drive the car, so Studebaker – at his request – instead gave Roger this particular model. So with all that Indiana history at an Indiana sale, it should have done well, right? Even touting its 94 out of 100 points judging result at the 2009 Avanti meet could not muster sales beyond the reserve; bidding ground to a halt at $30,000"

  2. Yes, these cars have made their rounds of other publications. The Hemmings blog was featuring them as part of the Glenmoor Gathering (maybe it was the first time they were displayed as part of a show?). As for the topic title, I just took it from the Hemmings article. And for the text included on my link, it should be corrected, because they have 3 doors, not 4.

    Thanks for keeping me honest....

  3. Anyone else on this forum find any similarities between the Avanti and the Jensen Interceptor? Whenever I see a picture of the Interceptor(don't think I've seen one in real life), from the A pillar back it has a lot of similarities. But do the similarities end there?

  4. As per a recent Avanti Magazine, there was a picture of a 4-door Avanti mold sitting in an abandoned(crumbling) warehouse. Wouldn't the studebaker international museum would be interested in that. If not, surely someone would. I wonder if Cafaro would arrange to donate it, since he is the closest/most recent owner (not on trial) of the Avanti Automobile Corporation.

  5. Avanti's status since late 2006.....DOA

Aside from the national meets, local chapters, this site/forum and a couple other fansites (avantisource.com & theavanti.com) not much new....

The avantimotors.com site is still up so you can see what they did to the Avanti after 1991....
