mfg Posted January 30, 2015 Report Posted January 30, 2015 The Studebaker Avanti shop manual suggests a 'putty rub' applied over the primer coat before final painting of an Avanti body panel. What did Studebaker mean by 'putty rub'?

mfg Posted February 5, 2015 Author Report Posted February 5, 2015 Not exactly....A 'putty rub' is a thin application of 'red putty' or 'red lead' over a primed body surface to fill in any fine scratches, pinholes, etc. The putty is usually 'blocked' sanded with 220 grit wet & dry sandpaper, before a final application of primer and then the finish topcoats of paint.
