Folks - am now down to re-installing all the weatherstriping on 63R2552. Purchased the set from Studebaker Int'l - however - didn't take close ups of exactly how the old was installed when i removed it and want to make sure this is done properly ( shop manual is a bit vague ). So - could I trouble one of you R-1 owners to shoot me a few photos of your weatherstripping install? Looking primarily for the termination point and style of termination of the 'round the door strip, the door corner seal and the front upper door seal on the post ( how far down past the stainless, if at all, does it go?) Thanks everyone. Steve

Folks
Am now down to replacing the trunk carpets in 63R2552 - exterior is Avanti Red - interior carpet is the red/black peppered w/fawn dash ( Combo 7 )
What is the appropriate/stock trunk liner that came stock with the car - fabric/carpet or vinyl?
And what would the cost be for new and who would you recommend?
The car is a driver but am striving to keep the cosmetics as close to original as possible

okc63avanti - stayed pretty stock w/my color which is the original Avanti Red ( tho' it looks more primary red in the photo ). Jon Myers worked on my car in the mid-late 90's for the prior owner and basically did the same set up on mine you're getting - in those days I think he called it an R-2 & 7/8ths set up. Have been told our set up is a much better driving experience than a pure R-3. Anyway - am about at the end of my resto now so will be able to run this sucker some and enjoy it. Good luck on yours - Myer's are the folks to have involved for a first rate job in my book.

the assemblies were $135/each.....

Post Script - got a bright shiny new set of rear light assemblies from Nostalgic Motors - fit and finish are quite good - and they feel like they are good deal more solid than the lost originals. At least on #2552 the fit was spot on.....

I can agree with the use of the Kuhmo's on an Avanti - have had them for almost a year and find them quiet, solid and reliable. No tread wear to speak of yet after a few thousand miles.....

Thanks everyone - the Optima Group 51 option is really attractive due to the space and weight savings - think I'll pursue that route. That 3EE is SO big and heavy - don't need any more
weight in the nose than already have - and this is a driver so no worries on picky judges.

Will be replacing the current contemporary battery under hood with one that is more to the original size/spec for the Avanti. Have heard of guys using John Deere tractor batteries that are close in size - also saw AC/Delco has some close to the old original spec. Any advise on getting the more traditional look under hood with a current/contemporary battery? Thanks Steve

63R1406 - I have 63R2552 and have been restoring it the last year. Added a low pressure aux electric fuel pump ( for carb fitted cars @ around 4-5 psi - not injection
spec's pumps which have much more pressure ) at the tank when it was pulled for boiling/re sealing. Have a hidden switch at the dash that kills the pump but have found
I leave it on all the time - it has an internal filter and the extra pressure prevents vapor lock which can be an issue in SoCal temp's. Good luck.

I doubt if you'll find a NOS set of tail light housings, but you should be able to find reproduction housings from Nostalgic Motors or maybe Studebaker International. I bought mine from Nostalgic several years ago and they look great.
It's always possible someone has a set of NOS, so call the vendors and ask. You never know.

I'm hoping for NOS but will probably have to settle for reproduction. Have contacted Stude Int'l and they are looking - didn't think of Nostalgic so will try them now.
Many Thanks
Steve

Folks - my re-chromer lost both rear tail light assemblies for my '63 while re doing all my chrome. Any tips on accessing a nice NOS set somewhere?
Avanti Replacement VIN Tag
in 1963-64 Avanti
Posted
Anyone know where I can get a new stamped VIN tag for under the hood. Have seen many an Avanti with the VIN stamped into a small metal plate riveted onto the passenger side top wheel well in the engine bay. Holes are present but no VIN tag on mine - would like to get an authentic looking one made. Thanks
