Thanks Pete. We will take a look soon. Still dont know what to do about the anchore point on the parcel shelf though.

I have been advised that the '63 should have the fixing points for lap belts already, so will pull the back seat and look. Belts from SI are on order. We have installed a set in the Lark so the familly are mobile, at least.
-
Thanks for your input Bob. I really think that we need 3 point harness. got to keep the baby safe. I will have to look into it further. May be a lap belt is sufficient to lock a baby seat in?

Hi, Has any one fitted rear seat belts to a '63 Avanti. There does not seem to be much to anchor them to. We want to fit a baby seat.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your comments. We will pull one of the seats on the weekend and take a closer look. My '71 Avanti2 came with the seats moved back from new, so the Production Order says.

Hi friends.
Has anyone here moved the front seats on a '63 Avanti back. We need to get about an extra 2" leg room. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

I have only owned the car for 2 years and as far as I know, it's the stock Tacho. But in 42 years, who knows what has been changed, It was one owner prior to me. Some time when the weather gets a bit better here, I will crawl up behind the dash and have another look.

Thanks Gunslinger, I have looked under the dash for the sender but have not located it. I guess that I will have to get a little more serious when I get under there again. I need some young bloke to check it out

Avanti Tacho Problem
The tacho in my 1971 Avanti 11 is acting strangely. As soon as I turn on the ignition, the needle goes all the way round past 8000 RPM and stays there until switched off. It has done this since I have owned it. Yesterday while out driving on the freeway, the needle started moving back and forward and gradually heading down to somewhere near it should be. Hit a bump, and back to the end stop again. It did not actually sit steadily on rpm, but moved around it for a short while, but now it's back to flat out. Any ideas? A bad earth perhaps. This car has been converted to right hand drive, so under the dash, it's all over the placeThanks in advance,Dave... -
I found this on a blog. Hope it helps.
Dave.
Looked at the sheet that came with the new wires and the lengths listed are as follows ( I'd scan it but the scanner is on the fritz ):
1975 -77 Corvette - All
Wire #1 - 46" Wire #2 - 54"
Wire #3 - 54" Wire #4 - 42"
Wire #5 - 28" Wire #6 - 28"
Wire #7 - 22" Wire #8 - 26"
Wires #'s 2 & 3 are longer because they have to cross over each other in front of the dist. and go to the opposite sides of the engine, as the others go to the sides that they're on the dist. Don't know if these measurements are correct for my car because my engine is still appart but I have a feeling the #7 should be the 26" and the #8 should be the 22" because of what 7T1vette said about the dist. being offset th the right side. Hope this helps.

Quite straight forward. The SBC HEI large cap dissy with the coil in the cap will drop right in. Two things you will need to do. Run a heavy 12 volt wire (12 ga min) to the Batt terminal on the distributor that is on when the ignition is on for power. You will also need to change the cap ends on the plug wires or replace them.
There are a lot of reasonably priced after market units if a good GM unit is not available. Just add the 12 volt wire, plug in the vacuum advance and change the plug wires. Good to go.
Bob
Thanks Bob. Guess that I had better buy me one.

Hi all. My '71 350ci is equipt with points and condencer but I would like to change it to a HEI unit. is it a simple change? I am not sure about the ingnition wires etc.

If it works out ok, it will be a first. One thing I've learned and had to accept with Avantis is that NOTHING ever goes easy. It usually seems to take two or three times before something is fixed and operates properly.
The part I have is not new. Perhaps the original owner already changed the unit. I had a look under the dash, but because it has been converted to RHC nothing is correct. I can't even find the sender unit. It must be tucked away somewhere, but?

Thanks for that Gunslinger. I am thinking that there is a new one of those in the spares parts that came with the car. Square plastic box about 3" x 3" x 1" I will have a look tonight. Could be an easy fix. ( That will be a first )

Hi. I have a problem with the tacho in my '71 Avanti2. when i turn the ignition on, the tacho goes to the extreme. as I crank the engine it drops to minimum then when the engine fires, it reads maximum the whole time. I believe that the car should have electronic ignition but is running points and condenser. Could this have anything to do with it?
Thanks in advance.

Essentially...if your stock car is experiencing no cooling issues, there's no reason to change anything.
The only problem we are having with the '63 is the expansion tank leaking again after having it rebuilt not long ago. I am thinking of changing my '71 because the tank is knocked around a fair bit and looks ugly. I thought change it before it does leak.

Here's a picture of one on an R2 Avanti that I captured at a meet in the same location metnioned above ....
okc, thank you for the photo. I was trying to work out how to mount it over near the battery. Now I understand. I guess the it would be the same for my '71, when I get around to it.

Hi all. We are going to fit a SI radiator overflow kit to my sons '63 R1 Avanti. There are no instructions with the kit. Has anyone got a picture of one fitted. Where does the bottle mount etc.?
Thanks in advance.

Dave, my 73 had a square plastic bottle as others have sucessfully commented on. My 64 R2 has the original surge tank which I have had repaired twice by Jon Myers. I have sent hime 2 others for resoration which when returned were beautiful. Sadly, after only 125 to 150 miles the solder fails and tiny leaks occur again and again and again. I am investigating a number of fabricators to make me a new one out of stainless steel. So far those investigations have not been fruitful. So, I will continue to look and look and look. I would really like to find NOS; I would buy 3 or 4 if I could.
Mark
Thanks for all of the replies. My tank is still working OK but looks ugly and I think that it is only a matter of time before it lets me down. We have had the tank on our '63 R1 rebuilt about 8 months ago and it is leaking already, so we are going to put a conversion kit on it first. then the same to the '71.
Regards Dave...

Oh that is good. Thanks Gunslinger.

My '71 Avanti 2 is fitted with a surge tank to the cooling system. I thought that Avanti 2 did away with them. Is there a kit similar to the one for '63/4, to do away with it?
Thanks, Dave...

Thanks for all of the advice. My '71 has the window type unit with points and condenser. I installed the wrong coil first, a Bosch GT40R resistor type. the motor fired straight up and ran for a few mins before backfiring and cutting out. Installed a standard type coil and it is running great.

I went to 2 parts shops and told them what I had and what I need. They both gave me a blank stare. Had no idea! I guess that I will have to do some asking around to get a suitable coil for it.

Only forty years old and the coil is bad? They sure don't make stuff to last, do they? It's no wonder GM is in the condition they are...this planned obsolescence is killing the industry!
Ha Ha Ha lol

Seat Belts.
in 1963-64 Avanti
Posted
Hi all. Well I know it has been a while. But today we finally got around to fitting the seat belts to the rear seat of the Avanti and sure enough, just as you all said, the anchor points are there although after 53 years. the bolts refused to come out. had to drill them out and fit new bolts and nuts etc. As for the third anchor point, we ran the strap over the back of the seat through the hatch opening in the parcel shelf and down to a fixing through the side of the spare wheel well, which is very solid. So it works well. Little Hunter will have a safe ride at the Easter Studebaker National meet in Wagga Wagga, NSW.
Thanks for your input.
Dave.
