  1. How rare is the Studebaker Avanti book by Thomas E. Bonsall?

One's on ebay and I don't want to overpay.

    Any reviews from AOAI members?

There is actually about 3 books on Ebay. I would not pay more then 30.00 for the one your talking about on Ebay. Go to Amazon.com and do a seach for the book and you can get the same book with a dust jacket. There are a couple of books with dust jackets. The dust jackets are not in prestine condtion but none the less you can get the book with a dust jacket for around 35.00

  2. Hi I have a 1988 Avanti convert and just went through rebuilding the rear window regulators. The pasenger rear wire frayed.

I have not gone through the front regulators yet trying calling this company....

I went through all the they came out of lebaron converts and other cars, don't waste your time. Even if you are so lucky to find what Avanti Motors used you would have to break the welds on the brackets they welded on so it would fit in the car, then reweld them on the one you found. I just got mine back from a company called Window Motor World inc out of Boone, NC 1-800-252-2649 ( windowmotorworld.net ) I had the regulator taken out and shipped. They replaced the motor with a newer one and replaced the cable with a thicker cable and guarantee it for 1 year. The cost for new motor, new cable and they payed shipping to me all for 150.00. They turned it around in one day. Save your time and energy and have these guys do it.

  3. I have an earlier 1988 Avanti Convert which is on the Monte Carlo chassis. 2 nd gear just went out in the tranny. is there a better transmission out there I should think about putting under the car or should i just rebuild the one that is in it which I think is a 200-4R..??

  4. looking for a replacement top for 89 convert

Go to www.electrontop.com for the convert top. You can't deal with them directly but they will tell you the name of the dealer that is the closest to you.. I just got a quote from the dealer closest to me for 304.00 for the vinyl top and 96.00 for the back window/curtain

  5. I found a 86 Renault Alliance Convert conplete unit and ground out the weld on the cable slide of my unit. Will find someone to spot weld it Monday. What did you send Window Motor World , the complete unit less the glass or the regulator with the cables taken out of the slide. I may send both of mine out.

Hi I sent them the complete regulator minus the glass. The other side just frayed on me, so sending both of yours at the same time is good idea.

  7. For the past 6+ months I have been having difficulty removing the key from the "lock cylinder". Lately it is 50% of the time. Now it has gotten to the point where I am also having occasional difficulty turning the key to 'start'. I have found that if the wheels are straight vs turned I have less occasions of these problems. I am thinking the "LOCKING COLUMN" may be the problem. What concerns me most is that in addition to the lock - this whole 69 piece set-up also prevents shifting into gears / I don't want to find myself stranded somewhere someday. Any thoughts AND is there another way to be able to start car if I give-up on the factory set-up ie. separate start switch/button?

    Bill Daly

    Hi Bill

I had a similar problem. One of the metal shims under the steering column fell out so I put it back and tightend the steering column down and what I found out is if I tighted it too tight My ignition would not work and I could not shift the shifter. Try loosening up I think there are 4 bolts holding the steering column up and see if this makes a difference.

  8. Does anyone know the donor for the seal for a 1989 Covertible top? The seal looks like the 1988 roof seal from a Monte Carlo but it appears to be too short. Looking for help?

    Thanks

    Ernest

HI I alos have a convert did you find out anything on the convert top seals.?? Please let me know via email DVS40@aol.com Thanks..

  9. I have a 1988 Avanti Convert. As far as the converts they were 2 different chassis in 1988. They used what they had left of the Monte Carlo's while switching over to the Caprice chassis in 1988. If your gas cap is on top behind the rear window it is on a Monte Carlo frame. If your convert has the gas cap on side then it was on a Caprice chassis which they used the full fiberglass ground effects front, back and side to cover the chassis. My covert was ordered with the front and rear ground effects but the side ground effect is just a black piece of plastic not the full fiberglass side ground effects as if you checked the box on the order form in 1988 titled "New Avanti" which you got the Caprice chassis. In 1989 all the convert cars are on the Caprice frame. I believe that the El Camino frame was used on the other Avanti models in 1988. All the Avanti's in 1987 1988 1989 came with a 305 Chev motor.
