Dittos on the looks great...really a nice car.

Just wanted to add that the interior looks really nice.

Site is unlisted: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/avanti/
I wish the guys there would indeed use this site....much better format than the Yahoo style, where the posts are run together in consecutive order rather than by subject.
I'm relatively new to that site (under a year), and don't understand why this site isn't utilized more.
The other few forums I am on all avoid the Yahoo format, but it's apparently the one of choice for the Avanti guys.

Yes, unfortunately, this site is fairly dead; the Yahoo Avanti site is a good one; I'm surprised more of the Avanti people don't post on this one.

Keep the Impala SS. I have the Impala SS in a tuxedo, namely a '95 Fleetwood, with SS springs, HO sway bars and some other upgrades.
I consider my '81 Avanti the old man's Camaro.

You should consider marketing the conversion. I know at least one who would be interested.

I have used the screw base flourescent bulbs in my regular drop light, but they crack soooo easy. Last one only fell about 12 inches onto the interior carpet.
-
I might want one for my '81, depending on cost. I really don't need one now, but over the winter would be the ideal time to install one.

I already posted this in parts wanted, but I realize not everyone reads that....
I would like to convert my '81 back to regular wind-up windows in the future; if anyone knows of a parted Avanti with the necessary parts, or one who would want the power units exchanged, etc., pls. let me know.
My windows work fine now, but I just prefer the manual cranks.
Thank you,
Paul

I appreciate your detail on what you are doing.
Thanks, Paul

Great story, Wayne! I thought those types of things only happened to me.

Welcome!

Isn't it run out of Cancun, where all the weather action went through?

I (of course) agree; while it is one of the best looking add on bumpers this guy has ever seen, it's hard to beat the original look.
-
I've had 3 Avantis at different times on with Geico and never had any problems; of course, I never had a bad crash either.
-
Both. The main assembly unbolts from circular frame mounted extensions which in my case I cut off with a sawzall and a 5 pack of metal cutting blades. Some people just do the unbolting part and use the frame mounts for mounting fog lights.

I use my wife's smaller fingers to loosen the bulbs the other day. I discovered that, by spraying the base with WD40 (also into the socket), I could easily remove the bulbs with my big hands. The changed bulbs must have been in there for quite a while.

Thanks for the info.

Isn't the AII bolt pattern a small Ford pattern? Does anyone know the stock wheel size and what can fit in the wheelwells?
What about 17" wheels? Anyone know where I can find data on what fits in this size?
Questions coming out all over,
Thanks,
Paul

I had 2 used Avantis at different times in the 80's and now have found an '81 which I hope to have in my possession within 3 weeks or so...anyway, as any good former Avanti owner would do, I am trying to catch up on upgrades, etc. to the Altman era Avantis which have come about since the '80s. Basically I haven't been to "Avanti school" since then.
One way for me to do this was to list some modifications found on other Avantis. I noticed a suspension upgrade to the 84-86 front and rear sway bars. What about this? Is this a good, easy upgrade to thicker bars, which I suspect? Where can I get them?
Also, can someone pass along any good sites which might list some of these upgrades, or
any others I should consider?
Sorry for all the questions, but I appreciate in advance any reponses. Any good site names would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Paul

Good luck with the purchase; I used to have 2 AII's and am beginning to look for another one from the Altman era myself.
There are parts around; many site links available...you will enjoy the car I'm sure.

Thanks for the info!

Does anyone know who makes a good aftermarket wiring kit for a fiberglass body/Avanti?
I have done a number of EZ wiring kits, but never anything on fiberglass.
I guess it would just mean running a number of extra grounds to the circuits.

All right. Always satisfying to do something right the first time.

I took mine off my '81. You can cut the mounting points back behind the grille opening to completely eliminate it.
Now, I have to buy an old style grille to cover up the 2 rectangular missing sections, but it still looks better.
Paul
PS: Ref the grille cutouts, I'm trying various options to avoid spending $200 on a new old grille, but haven't found anything completely satisfactory yet.
