  1. I'm still having this same problem after flushing out the fuel tank, replacing the electric fuel pump, installing two fuel filters (from tank to pump, then pump to carburetor), and rebuilding the carburetor twice.  Even with all of this, I'm noticing that the (clear) fuel filter going to the carburetor has no gas in it.

Next and hopefully last step is replacing the steel fuel lines.  I bought new 3/8" diameter steel fuel line and will work on this project in the near future.  By the way, in case you're not aware R1s have 3/8" diameter tubing from the tank to a 3-way brass T-joint under the driver's door (following the frame), where the diameter changes to 5/16" diameter.

  2. Does anyone have an extra working fuel gauge for sale, or can recommend someone to repair?  I live in Southern California, took the gauge to Redline Gauge Works in Santa Clarita, they said they fixed it but I don't consider the gauge accurate.  I even bought an extra sending unit and aftermarket gauge to diagnose, and it's definitely the original Avanti fuel gauge.  Unfortunately the aftermarket gauge doesn't fit in the instrument cluster, and Redline Gauge Works wants in upwards of $300 to replace the original gauge innards with new workings.  But they did quartz the clock and fixed the vacuum gauge.

Any suggestions are appreciated.  Thanks, Stu

  3. Steve Remick...I too had a problem with the engine coughing when driving, so I bought a second Pertronix ignitor then noticed in the instructions:

Many vehicles came equipped with ballast resistor or resistance wire. To achieve optimum performance from the Ignitor ignition system, we recommend the removal of these components.

So on the second install, I bypassed the ballast resistor and the problem went away.  Here's a link to the installation instructions:

    Hope this helps.  Stu
