I do not understand what "Avanti LTD" means??...........Are you saying that this group has separated from the AOAI?

Avanti LTD is a Northern California club that has existed nearly 50 years but was kicked out of AOAI for allowing widows to remain in the club even though they were not members of the national club.....go figure! I am a forty year member who left Avanti LTD as they just didn't seem to care about supporting AOAI...very short sighted if you ask me!

  2. The date is set: Saturday April 27th 2019, 11-3, Grupe Park, Stockton CA. Avanti LTD members (no longer affiliated with AOAI ?....the reason I dropped out☹️)  and three SDC Chapters plus special guests from the Pacific Gold Country Rambler Club. PM me for details....

That sounds like they messed up the antenna lead when they installed the new radio.  Also, they may have relocated that extraneous cable to where it would pick up "noise" and that helped to create the problem.

Could be!....I'm just happy to have this challenge in the past......Thanks to all who shared their ideas......(Still love my Avanti....she's been with me since day 1 and will be until the the final day.....). ...then my nephew gets her.....he keeps dropping banana peels in front of me.....I wonder why?

I believe that the extra, unattached cable was acting as an antenna and picking up extraneous signals that it was feeding back to the radio via that antenna splitter.

I have to disagree....the cable splitter had been on the car since new....never a problem until a professional tune up......then the static started.....they rechecked everything and couldn't find the problem...two years later the shop has new service manager and new technician who had a great electrical reputation....I got the new folks to recheck everything again.....they added a "radio noise suppressor" and removed the cable splitter, put a new tip on the buggered up antenna cable and connected direct to the radio....whalla!.....no static!

  5. Thanks, I'm the original owner. This "can" mounts to a bracket that is attached to the dash board cover. Nothing is visible other than "tune" with an arrow pointing right and the number....the end of the antenna cable is "loose".....going to take it to radio shop to see if they can repair/replace. I'm thinking this is the source of my static issues.....

Okay.  That link got me to the information.  I am not familiar with those exact parts and I do not have the time to research them.  It may be incorrectly grounded or improperly placed shielding, but you should notice a change in static with a change in engine rpm.  Perhaps they disturbed some other wiring or ground while the car was being worked on.  Do you have shielding over the plug wires as well as the distributor?  If not, it could be those plug wires.

Thank You Sir....no change with rpm changes.....according to their web site the wires are the res. type.....they rechecked the shields and I double checked them. Thinking of looking for a new shop and starting over.....

No.  I do not know where to find that in the multitude of posts that you have started related to this issue on the two forums.

http://forum.studebakerdriversclub.com/showthread.php?108696-Avanti-Radio-Static-Modern-Radios Yup, I suppose many are tired of seeing my posts on this issue as I am sick of posting 'em too!....still searching!  Took the issue to an auto audio store.....they couldn't help.....just wanted to sell me some new speakers(which it needed anyway).....

If you didn't have static before your tune-up, but had it after, it isn't your radio's fault.  Either something was done incorrectly, incorrect part(s) were used and/or something was left out.

That's my suspicion too....but I've had no luck in tracking down the issue...did you see my SDC post detailing the exact parts used....?

A car made of metal has natural radio frequency interference damping qualities...fiberglass doesn't.  Fiberglass cars required shielding around the causes of the RFI...distributor, coil, spark plug wires and spark plugs.  Other causes such as voltage regulators would receive filters added on.  Once radios were available with adequate filters built in, the shielding was no longer necessary.

I know the shielding in Corevettes with HEI ignition was no longer sheet steel boxes but a polymer casing that snapped in and had a heavy-duty aluminum foil-like sheet inside which served the purpose.

I was told my '79 has HEI ignition....I'm looking for one of those AM/FM radios with "adequate filters built in"....can anyone recommend a current production unit that will cure the problem....I've been into two auto audio stores.....they don't seem to understand what I'm talking about.... a two knob unit that fits the Avanti will be required.....(I've had no luck, so far, in eliminating the static that arose after a professional tuneup.....).

Nothing new that I know of because the only shaft style radios are only made in the super cheapo brands. The Avanti IIs of the 70s used a small chassis shaft style Blaupunkt radio.  I had them in all my Avanti IIs which were a 72, two 74s and a 76. Virtually all European cars of the 70s and early 80s used some model of Blaupunkt which will fit. Used ones are getting a little pricey and just about any of them will look correct for your car. Old radios can be converted to modern electronics to perform like a newer radio. Radio Roy on the Studebaker forum repairs radios and he is reasonable.

Thanks....I'm looking to upgrade to something without static.....
