  1. My 1970 Avanti II RQA 0332 came with a 350 CID 300 HP. I am fixing that with it bored to 355 CID and a Roller Cam and rockers and Turbo Angle Plug GM cylinder heads. Hopefully I will have some success this spring/summer in bringing this very old project to fruition.

  2. Hi Guys,

I am planning for this spring to hopefully finish my long awaited 1970 Project Avanti.

I am converting a Flight-o-matic to a Doug Nash 5 Speed Standard Transmission.

I have the pedals suspended and am using a scatter shield on the back of a heavily modified 355 CID.

I realize the new clutches are all diaphragm but seeing as I started this a long time ago it is old school technology.

I have a McLeod Borg & Beck Long clutch assembly which I don't believe they use any more(-11"?) Has anyone used a McLeod hydraulic throw out bearing? If so which model?

Any assistance and guidance is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, Bill

  3. I concur with Jack as it seems all too common to trash the Dunlop/Girling Disc Brake setup which was chosen as OEM for Avantis and Performance Hawks and Larks. If you may recall originally they were intended to be used to stop a Jaguar Mark 10 which is close to 1000 lbs heavier than an Avanti. I am sure that if all is rebuilt back to factory specs and no corners are cut they will perform adequately. Don't forget Jaguar raced with these at LeMans.I have used the 2 1/4" Stainless Steel pistons from Hye-Dra-Cyl Corporation http://www.hyedracyl.com/etype.html (HDC Part # 8777-14) which give an ADDITIONAL 15 % clamping force if required. These are also the same as used on early Toyota Crown full size cars although somewhat difficult to source these days

  4. Thanks for all the suggestions. A pal of mine has an experienced engine shop and has built many 400 cid motors achieving around 420 hp/ 430 lbs torque. Since I have a brand new short block it looks like a no brainer to go this route.

I'll proceed this spring and keep you posted as to the outcome. My trans is most likely a 200r4 so sourcing a bullet proof unit shouldn't be very difficult. Proper dual exhaust from Silvertone, cat delete etc should make it similar to plwindishes' '76. I have a serious SpeedPro Roller cam kit to top things off.

    Cheers, Bill

  5. On the IDYSD weekend we drove our '83, 305, 25,000 original mile Avanti. At one point I almost had heart failure as I noted the oil pressure even lower than normal (35-40psi). I believe it was showing approx 20 psi at highway speed (2200 rpm). As no noises occurred I thought it to be a gauge or sender malfunction. I ended up tapping heavily on the gauge itself and presto, back up to 40. Maybe other units are lazy like this one?

  6. Just came back from 1700 mile trip to Kelso meet and Oregon. Only failure was a 20 amp fuse for the cigar lighter(doing duty for Sirius XM) in damp southern Oregon. As in post# 7, same manual thing-no diagram. Figured it out through process of elimination. Pretty minor failure in the big picture. Thank you Ed, for posting a proper schematic for next time (if there is one).

    Cheers, Bill

  7. Thanks for the support, Warren & Glen. I guess I knew all along what I was going to have to do with the 400 cid, It's just difficult when the car has such low miles. I don't really pound enough miles that even a slight sacrifice in economy would make much difference. I'll keep you posted but it looks like I've got a project for later this winter.

  8. Hi Guys,

OK, I've got two, a 1970 which is my hot rod unit still under construction and a 1983 original time capsule survivor with just 22,500 original miles on it. We just returned from a 1776 mile trip to the Kelso Washington meet and subsequent Oregon visitations. My question is this: I'm having an awfully hard time with only 150 HP on tap and yet I don't want to ruin the originality nor take away from getting 24.8 mpg on the highway. I know I want my cake and eat it too but damn it's frustrating to have to plan your passing well in advance. I've always had lots of power in all my cars and was wondering if anyone else has modified this early computer 305 with decent results? I seem to recall Edelbrock used to make some computer upgrade to this LD3 (?) early computer unit. Also I'm not subject to emissions where we live so I could upgrade the exhaust to a real dual setup (eliminating the cat) without affecting the originality. Has anyone upgraded the rockers to rollers and did they fit under the stock valve covers? How about a carb upgrade to a double pumper? Any input and feedback will be appreciated and considered.

    Thanks, Bill
