  1. I have a 1963 (built 12/62) Avanti that is original Avanti Gold exterior with the original beige/elk interior. At some point in this cars life someone removed the original carpet and replaced with dark brown. I would like to have the carpet color the original color. I believe this would be biege "salt and pepper", correct? I have looked on the documents I have with the car but can not find a carpet color designation. What document would show the original color on my car? As always, thank you for your expertise!

  2. FYI. I replaced the black rubber hose (see page 1 in the parts book} that goes from the supercharger air cleaner to the breather tube on my 1963 R2. The hose is shown in the parts book (parts book page 14) as #1557852. After looking at a "zillion" hoses at O'Reillys parts store, I found that Gates part # 18071 fits almost perfectly. Even the spring clamps work. Hope this helps someone.

  3. I have a 1963 Avanti. I am looking for a "hood bumper and bracket". Inside of the hood near the front of the hood, mounted on the front bracket & gusset assay. The bumper is part # 1552311 and I could not find the bracket part # in the parts book. I believe this bumper and bracket are used to adjust and "level" the front/center of the hood in relation to the front cowl. Anybody have one? Thank you!

  4. I have a 1963 Avanti built on 12/27/62. I have read that the early Avanti had a "tag under the dash or glovebox" that had I.D. information about the car. I looked under my dash and glove box and found no tag. I did see some very old glue that held something under the dash. If this tag did exist at some time was it paper, decal, metal? What information was provided by this tag? How was it attached? Does anyone have a copy of this tag that they could show on the forum?

As always thank you for your expertise !

  5. Psdenno,

I do not know about any Avantis' fixes, but the early Corvettes had the same problem. About 1965 Corvette stopped mounting their shifter on the transmission and mounted it on the frame. The mounting bracket was referred to as a " divorce plate" The shifter was mounted to the the divorce plate and the divorce plate was mounted to the frame. It solved the rattle problem. Perhaps the Avanti shifter could be mounted to the frame? Just an idea not a solution for you!

  6. Gunslinger. Thanks for your input. Yep, the switch is upside down in the owners manual! You know your "stuff"! Funny, I took this car to a local car show recently and won a trophy for best "Orphan car"! Every one at the show thought Studebaker Avanti's to be a little "quirky". Actually the reason I originally wanted a Avanti is because they are different. Nothing against them, but I did not want just another 55-57 Chevy. Thank you Raymond Loewy!

  7. I have Avanti R2 # 63R2318, built 12/62. When I insert the ignition key, it must go in "upside down". That is, the "teeth" up and the "flat side" down. Seems wrong to me. The door locks ( which use the same key ) work "right side" up. Or is that the way the lock worked from the factory? My original owner's manual does not address this issue. Maybe someone along this cars history possibly installed the ignition lock upside down? I have seen old fords ( early 50's ) with "upside down" keys. Your thoughts? Thank you for your expertise!

  8. I have a 1963 Avanti and frequently attend cars shows. I am constantly searching to correct my Avanti to factory details. I am also a member of the National Corvette Restorers Society (NCRS). The NCRS has manuals that show factory correct details. Is there a Avanti manual that goes into these factory details? What do the judges use at Avanti National shows to judge cars. Thank you for your guidance!
