I don't think it was to 'lift the fortunes' of Studebaker which at the time was terminal...highest labor costs in the industry and serious competition from Detroit. I think it was Egbert's personal statement to the reactionary South Bend elders. I believe he left the company under the proverbial 'cloud', and sadly died at age 49 a few years later. No doubt that the Avanti was his legacy, but I wouldn't rename the car "Egbert".
