  1. I think that we should demand that Studebaker issue a recall order so that we can take them into our local dealer for free repair!!!! Seriously, on every other steering wheel horn repair that I have done, I can see and understand what makes contact and grounds causing the horn to blow. The Avanti is a different animal and I fail to comprehend it. stupak

  2. Thanks Guys: I replaced the horn relay early on. Checked both horns and they are OK. It's odd but each time I pull the wheel, fiddle around, put it back on, the horn works OK for a bit. Then, no horn. I've thought about putting a 'cheater' button under the dash but for a car of this stature, that just isn't right!

Gunslinger: I understand what you say about the horn bar creating a ground and the horn blowing. BUT...what I don't see with the wheel in hand off the car is any movement or grounding of anything when I push either horn bar. There are 3 small screws with springs that hold the brass plate to the wheel. When tightened, there appears to be no grounding of anything that would cause the horn to blow. It's really mind blowing, pardon the pun. stupak

  3. The horn in my '63 is very erratic. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. I have pulled the wheel several times and tried/checked everything. What I think is odd, with the wheel in hand and the brass plate tightened to the wheel, there doesn't appear to be any movement pressing the horn bars that would cause the horn to blow. I've checked the workshop manual and there is very little in the form of trouble shooting. I've cleaned the brass plate, both sides. I've cleand the spring loaded wire contact. I've left the brass plate on the wheel slightly loose. NOTHING seems to permanantly correct the problem. Any ideas? Thanks. stupak

  4. According to the AMA Spec's dated 11/30/62, the 1963 battery is a WILLARD No. HDD-3EE, mounted on a shelf, left front inner fender apron.

The battery size (OD) is 7-5/8" H x 4-1/8" W x 19-3/16" L. The permanently mounted hold down 'rods' are 9" H. So......the hold down bracket is approx 3/8" thick, the PAL wing nuts (the proper ones) are not very thick so that leaves approx 3/4" of the threads exposed after the hold downs and wing nuts are installed. stupak

PS: An aftermarket absorbing battery mat will not adversely affect the overall height.

  5. Jim: I knew that I had some type of specification information. I spent a few hours seaching this morning and here's what I came up with.

AMA Specifications - Passenger Car, pub no. AMA-40A, for 63R and 63R Supercharged vehicles, issued 7/62, Revised 11/30/62, Page 10 states:

Electric Supply System: Make and Model - Willard HDD-3EE, volts 12 - amp hr 60

Hope this helps. We have owned our 1963 Avanti since February 1965. I have just about everything ever printed on the Avanti, 'somewhere'!

  6. Jim: I don't have 'official' documentation' concerning the batteries originally installed. That said, they WERE Willard from the factory. Black case, tar top, red caps. I still have the original battery that was installed new in our Avanti. I had a battery manufacturer 'rebuild' it several times over the years but after the fourth time, they said they could not do it again. I think they just didn't want to do that type of work any longer. BUT.....I still have the batterty. If your coming to G/Burg, I'll bring a picture of it along. stupak

  7. Jim: I didn't realize they were judging 'heads' ! Seriously....I have contacted the meet chairman regarding who will be the Chief Judge for the meet in Gettysburg. As soon as I hear from him, I'll let you know. Also, the description of the survivor class was in Mimi's monthly letter in TW's, several months ago, without looking, I'd say the Feb or Mar TW's. I know because I emailed her my comments to the proposed 'rules' and never received an answer.

  8. Avanti83: What did the troughs look like inside, looking thru the holes you drilled? Looks like a neat idea. I also like Gunslingers idea of drilling the bottom and inserting removeable plugs. Probably more serviceable than 'outting' the carpet to check each time.
