  1. I have an '84. It had michelins on it when purchased. I forget the size...but I discovered that my speedo was 10% faster than actual speed. After some calculations I switched to 225/70R15 (Comp T/A) rear and 225/60R15 front (because 225/70 rubbed the front inner fender well on strong cornering) It is now time to replace them and I am looking at 205/75R15 as they are closest in radius and will make tire rotation easier.

  2. My face is red. I blame old age, dim garage, need for glasses.....the tires are actually 225/70 rear, 225/60 front and easily sourced. My confusion arose because (due to some garage being kind and rotating front to rear unbeknownst to me) I was thinking that the 60's were 80's, since I could make out that the front were 70's and I knew that the rear were larger. The reason for the different sizes is still the same, but now it is no longer an issue to source them.

  3. Years back I discovered that the standard Michelin tire on my car were too small, causing my speedometer to read 10% too high. I calculated and found a tire size 225-80R15 (Comp T/A) that brought the speedo to an accurate value. But it turned out that this size caused fender rubbing on my front tires as I turned corners (even at slow speeds) I solved this by putting 225-70 on the front. (and I had an additional slight rake to the car which I liked) Now it is time to replace the tires and I can't find the 225-80 anywhere. I would go back to the original sized tire, 215-60R15, if I could replace the gear that drives the speedometer.....but I don't know where or how accessible that gear is. Otherwise I need to find a tire size that will keep my speedo accurate. Any ideas??

  4. The hood support on my 84 has just decided to quit locking. I am able to pull out the latch from the slide and make it stay in position, but I don't want to be fiddling with that every time I go under the hood. Does anyone know of a fix or a replacement? If anyone does not understand, I can get a picture of the mechanism. Online searches only show gas shocks or the lift rod that is placed in position by hand for front lift hoods

  5. There are two bolts embedded into the bottom of the reservoir. The nuts are located directly below. You have to lie on your back while reaching up around the steering wheel to feel the nuts. They are visible with a flash light from that prone position, with your head around the brake pedal. After removing mine (at least twice) to try and locate and repair a leak, I cut off the bolts, covered the holes on the shelf of the engine bay and used velcro to hold down the reservoir. This was a fortunate choice as it has started to leak again and I have taken it off (quite easily) to try and repair it once more....this time with a plastic weld instead of a fiberglass wrap.

  6. Deciding to replace the transmission filter in my 1984 Avanti, I have discovered that while the transmission is a TH700-r4 (based on pan appearance), the filter inside appears to be the same as the one used in the TH200-4R (based on parts photos of the two filters where the 200 has the opening to the filter on the top, while the 400 has the opening on the bottom) It appears that the 200-4R was a common tranny for the years around my car. Was the 700-R4 an option for that year?  The June 84 edition of R&T has a write up on the Avanti, but it says little about the transmission. Was Avanti doing a mix and match of internal transmission components as well as transmissions. I am not the origin al owner, but have had it for the last 30 years and knowing who the previous owners were, I do not believe that they would have done a tranny swap.
