Lou,
The auto is out of the vehicle.
If I hold the lever in Park, the output shaft does lock. If I let go of the lever, it springs back one position.
I will remove the pan asap and have a look at the internals. I'll report back.
Thanks, Leon.

Thanks for the suggestion. Funny; I didn't think about it being faulty! I'll open up the box and check out the the detent ball/spring setup.
I did think about the Ford option as I also have a Ford unit that came out of a Stude Avanti. However it has the vacuum modulator and Ford numbers cast into the housing.

I have an auto from a 66 Avanti.
When I move the lever on the box to Park, it is `spring loaded' and moves back when I let go. Is this normal? The other powershifts I have from Studebakers don't do this.
Thanks, Leon.

You can get center caps through Summit Racing or Coker Tires. They're not inexpensive...around $40 or so each. Get the ones for the Mopar application with the bullseye circle emblem or the ones with the Magnum 500 emblem...it doesn't matter...most of us take that emblem out and replace it with the same size Avanti emblem sold by Studebaker International and a few other vendors...a perfect fit and they just "belong" on the car!
I purchased new lug nuts at Pep Boys since the ones on my car were pretty beaten up from years of wear. They're 1/2" right hand thread...take an old one (if you have any) to Pep Boys or whatever store like that and simply match them up. $20 more or less should cover a new set. You can get the lug nuts from Summit or Coker as well...your choice.
Thanks Bruce,
Do you have a photo of the correct lug nut? I have none.
Is it a Ford style nut seat or the Stude/Chrysler style? I think the seats are different.
Leon.

I have a set of Magnum 500 wheels from an Avanti II.
I need to purchase lug nuts. Can anyone tell me the style/type used with these wheels? I've checked out the Summit Racing website but there are many options!
I also need to get center caps.

Hi,
Can anyone tell me the difference between the early (before eng R-1023 & RS-1040) clutch release bearing shaft (536298) and the later unit (1550523). I also have the same question for the clutch release bearing (513143) and (1560028). Are the later numbers heavier duty units?
Thanks, Leon.

Guys,
Thanks for your comments. Just to clarify; the lever doesn't move beyond P, it just won't stay there! The output shaft locks up in the normal fashion while I hold the lever in P. I can't see anything that looks a problem when I have the pan off and move the lever through all six positions. However I am not an auto expert! My conclusion at this point is that there is a fault but it's not obvious.
I have checked the power shift auto from my 63 R2 Hawk and another BW unit with 1963 Ford casting numbers (came out of an Avanti). Both of these stay in Park when I move the lever there.
Cheers, Leon.
